Age of Calamity is a hack and slash game based on the open-world adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and takes place 100 years ago during the approach of the Great Calamity that led to the events of BOTW.

As much as I had fun with this game, there were a couple of things that held it back just a little bit. The main thing for me was how repetitive this game can be, even with the huge array of characters to play as. The repetitiveness only really got to me as I was approaching the final stretch of the game. At that point, I kinda just wanted to get the game over with, but I will say, beating it did leave me feeling good.
The game also lets you use the Sheikah Runes from BOTW as a means of attacking, and that really does add to the fun that this game can bring.

Framerate dips do happen, but it's really not an issue. The first time I played the demo, I was like "Holy shit this framerate is lower than I expected." Then after I got past the first level in the full game, I hardly noticed any dips in framerate from there on out.

What the game excels at is making it actually feel like an official extension of BOTW. The cutscenes, the dialogue, the characters, it's all very well done and it really looks and feels like the same world that we observed through Link's memories in BOTW. As for the story, which I won't spoil anything, it does take it in an interesting direction that may not be what you'd expect, assuming you haven't played the very first level. It may not be what I originally wanted, but I still left feeling pretty satisfied.

Overall, if you're a fan of BOTW like me, or you're a fan of hack and slash games, you should definitely take a look at this, or give the demo a try. Just don't go in thinking that it's going to be the same magnum-opus of a game that BOTW and its impending sequel sets out to be.
