It kind of goes to show just how strong a license can carry a game for someone personally. The first DBZ Budokai is below average as all hell, but it's close to me for being the first actual new DBZ we ever got in the west that wasn't some trash that Infogrames dug up that was eight years old or the absolutely abominable GT Final Bout. Rocko's Modern Life only had one game ever, and it was a whack escort mission game, yet I still yearned to play it for years prior to my discovery of emulation.

God almighty, finding out there were an entire army of Sailor Moon games on the Super Famicom? It was like stumbling upon a treasure trove I didn't know existed. It was the same for all the DBZ games too, but unfortunately I didn't really like a lot of those, that's probably worth forty lashes with the cat'o nine I know. In the end I only really enjoyed the Sailor Moon fighters on Super Famicom, then I ended up playing this beat'em up on Mega Drive a bunch since my DS's flashcart was kinda shit at playing anything above Genesis in terms of power. Hell, you had to manually move the screen around for Genesis, because the resolution was bigger than the DS's screen.

Through the eyes of anyone else this game would probably be at least semi-shit on. Your attack options aren't that varied and hitting things isn't super satisfying like in Bare Knuckle III, there's no co-op, and the enemies aren't that threatening aside from the fat clown guys and the two final bosses that you're basically required to tank projectiles to beat. The fact remains though, I can play as Ami and throw about thirty people out of a ten-story elevator to their doom, and deliver a Jake Roberts-style DDT to them for their trouble. Playing this in Japanese back in the day was unfortunately a big bummer, but playing it now with the translation makes it even more of a pleasant experience as it's a perfect reflection of the anime that I tried to secretly watch when I was young, because I thought my parents would judge me for watching a show marketed towards girls.

Madness, a boy watching a girls show?! Inconceivable. Couldn't be me...

Nah, 'twas me.

I was that one kid who didn't watch Dragon Ball Z growing up, but I definitely watched Sailor Moon. The fact of the matter is that Sailor Moon rocks and always will. Also, if you want to play an "interesting" Sailor Moon game, check out the Italian exclusive La Luna Splende. It's not great. I just find it fascinating that a Sailor Moon game was released exclusively in Italy.

I watched it back in the day, too. It was anime, at that point I was watching as much of that shit as I could find.

@mobilespider thank you for reminding me about that one, I only heard about it via random browsing on the wiki. One of the oddest releases I can think of and it was like three years before the Crystal anime and the new dub would revive more interest. I wish we would get a new full non-mobile release of some sorts, but that's just me begging for an Arcsys fighter lol.

@reddish it's a fun watch, definitely recommend it. probably a bunch more digestible than DBZ in comparison, lol.
