DOOM Eternal should have been a slam dunk, a straight upgrade over 2016's game, but somehow it misses the mark a little. Many of the cutscenes take you out of the first-person perspective, and new weapon pickups are just floating icons rather than unique cutscenes. It feels strange to get so bogged down by details like that in a game like DOOM, but they were aspects that I really came to love about the previous entry. The gameplay is certainly an improvement at the very least, with the new aerial options and the meathook upgrade for the super shotgun being absolutely critical. Still, I couldn't help wishing it was a little better. Marauders sucked hard, also.
