Ehhhhh fuck it, it’s a 10/10 again!
It may not be a critically perfect game and it certainly isn’t the best game ever, but damnit, I just can’t bring myself to have distaste for it. Not only cause it’s a fun as fuck game the whole way through, but because it is such a huge part of my childhood that it would feel disingenuous to NOT consider it an all-time favorite of mine. It’s been such a nostalgic gem for me for the past six years that I’ve played it that I could never bring myself to hate it. But even putting my nostalgia aside, there’s so much to love here that makes it such a treat to revisit. The characters and story may not be Undertale and Deltarune levels of well written and may have some missed opportunities but they get the damn job done. They’re fun and entertaining enough to make it’s relatively basic story so nice and full of charm. The gameplay may not be incredible (the platforming specifically has some annoying parts with how it uses its isometric viewpoint) but it’s still so much fun. The RPG mechanics are simple yet have a level of strategy to it and it works wonderfully with Mario’s platforming mechanics, all culminating in such a fun gameplay experience. It’s honestly miraculous how well the first ever Mario RPG accomplished at being a Mario RPG. The art direction is so vibrant and alive, the music slaps, I love the little side quests you can do, I love playing fucking god by using the Super Suit and making Geno super overpowered, it’s just so fun! Oh yeah, speaking of which, I change my mind, I like Geno again. He may not be narratively all that special and I still personally prefer the lil cloud baby Mallow, but c’mon man, it’s GENO! He’s so cool!
God I love this game, man. It doesn’t have the same level of character writing I like as games like Undertale and Deltarune, and it definitely isn’t as phenomenal as motherfucking Celeste, but it is still an absolute favorite of mine that I will cherish forever. I love this game with all my heart and I will never get tired of it. I cannot wait to play the remake.
