Handing a beloved series with a strong fanbase to an unproven studio was always going to be a risk, and unfortunately, it did not pan out.

The best thing the game has going for it is the concept of time travel which leads to the most varied worlds yet, along with some of the most unique characters joining the playable cast. The minigames are stronger across the board as well.

However, the narrative is by far the weakest in the series, the loading times are ridiculous, and the level design is questionable at best compared to even the first game. This leads to a very underwhelming experience regardless of how much of a Sly Cooper fan the player is.

This should be a case study for any studio considering handing off their game to other studios.

While the second game is a flat-out huge improvement across the board from the first game, the third entry in the series is more of a tradeoff in strengths.

The narrative is more complex (for better or worse), the animations improved, the characters have even more personality and the locations are more varied. However, none of the improvements are very significant. On the bright side, the downgrades to the music and level design are likewise not significant either.

Personally, I would rate it just as good as Sly 2, but with a weaker ending and some tradeoffs in strengths.

Suckerpunch took the solid foundation from the first game and improved upon it to create one of the best platformers of all time. The worlds are even more vibrant and well-crafted than the first game, and the gameplay and world design are much, much, better.

Each world is now a hub with levels taking place within it and in sectioned-off areas. Each character gets more time to showcase their unique abilities. The music in each world fits perfectly. Progression and character abilities are more complex. Nearly everything in the first game is improved upon or drastically changed to make a perfectly well-rounded game.

The only thing holding this game back from a perfect score is that a few of the minigames do not hit the mark.
