I honestly didn't really care for Super Castlevania 4 the first time I played it, but every time I come back to it I find myself enjoying it more and more. It has a bit of a different feel to it than the earlier games, so maybe I just expected something different. Right off the bat, the most notable change is how the game controls. There's been a sharp increase in your movement and whipping abilities, all of which are great fun and help to alleviate some of the frustrations with the earlier games. Some people think these changes make the game's combat too easy, but I still find it to be challenging enough, and it's honestly so much fun to whip all over the place that I don't even think I'd mind if it was. The music originally left me underwhelmed since it's a lot more atmospheric, but once I realized what it's going for I noticed how well it suits the game's mood, as well as how great it is on it's own. The art direction too is a bit more muted in this game, but given the capabilities of the Super Nintendo they're still able to put a lot of detail into everything, and this game has some absolutely beautiful backgrounds. My only big complaint is that, perhaps in an effort to balance the fact that the combat is easier, it seems they've put in a lot more stage hazards. Most of my deaths in this game feel like they came from pits and spikes, and there's a couple levels towards the end in particular that just go a bit overboard with it.
