I agree with Memoats that Fire Emblem Awakening is a really great introduction to the series and it was what I personally started with too, but FE7 aka Fire Emblem for the GBA is also a really good starting point! That one doesn't have nearly as much options for controlling difficulty and it is a much older game but it's still very forgiving. It has a really thorough tutorial and it'll give you a solid foundation going into the rest of the series, even better than Awakening would tbh. Since the game is so beginner friendly, I personally think it'll make permadeath feel less intimidating to newer players too (and honestly if you're emulating save states are also an option, play however you want lol).

I recently got my friend into the series through this game and he got hooked pretty much immediately. I didn't really have to explain much to him either since the game does it well.
