proof that dumbasses will clown on anything that differs from what they're comfortable with. take it from someone who had zero gen 5 experience and nearly wrote this game (as well as verdict day) off due to its flak and generally misconceived perceptions as being outdated and invalidated:

these people are fuckin' wrong!

yeah - the ACs are shorter and stockier, the game's slower paced and the combat's more tactical. but this is a problem... why? as if 4/fa weren't massive departures for the series in the first place, gen 5 tends to be treated like a black sheep when it has more in common with old gen to begin with. give me a break

if you like weighty mechs that feel akin to cobbled together machinery - this may be the AC for you! movement seems limited compared to gen 1-3 on paper, but it also boasts more potential. you may not be able to boost directly up in the air - fly high or watch the sun rise - but you can hop up and off walls infinitely, hover in midair and execute a slew of more advanced movements that amp the mobility tenfold

a lot of gen 6 ideas can be seen in their infancy here. shape based emblem editing that doesn't suck ass is a nice one (iykyk) as well as the boost kick and scan mode. more importantly, weapon bays make their first proper appearance (hangars don't count) and they're especially significant due to there being 3 damage types this time around. if this sounds daunting - it isn't. so as long as this image doesn't describe your attitude, you'll be fine - you have five fucking weapons - do the math

as for the campaign: it's all killer and no filler for the main story missions. they're lengthy and totally substantial - clocking in at around 10-20 minutes minimum and 20-40 a pop on average. here's the catch: there's only 10 of them (one less if you don't count the finale being a potentially 15 second long boss fight). it's pretty short. additionally there's 80 or so "order missions" which serve as a sort of postgame side content, but they're pathetically simple compared to the main story, super trivial and probably not worth the time

but overall - fuck what you've heard. this game's fun. if the short campaign doesn't sway you too negatively, pick it up. it's still a rewarding single player experience and physical copies aren't nearly as outrageously priced as vd's

oh yeah - soundtrack bangs too - but you knew that already

This was actually my first AC game. Didn't like it back then for basically the reasons you said, but I've played a few missions recently and I think it's a little better now. I still think the execution of some new ideas like scan mode leave a lot to be desired. I'm sure I'll do a full review of it once I get to it in my AC Marathon.

I'd like to add that despite what many people will tell you: The game is fully playable offline as the team point grind to get new parts in the shop is not painful whatsoever.

@deltawdunn i think scan mode is great honestly. i could see the computer voice getting annoying but the energy consumption dynamic is interesting and i really like that it's the safest way to use the boost kick - in exchange for being unable to use any other weapons. it's a risk-reward sorta dynamic that i fuck with

@skullieq yeah i hinted at this by mentioning single player - the only way to play this game now that the servers are shut down across the board - but i'll reiterate again for the sake of it that being instantly at team level 50 honestly seems game breaking and stupid to me. the shop unlock pace is just right and the story missions are all totally doable in solo play without any amount of mission replaying/order mission completion. i was at team level 18 by the end of the story and that was more than enough to wipe the final boss in a few seconds

Because no vertical boosting sucks. It's a matter of preference and personally while there are some cool things in gen 5, I think revolving the entire gameplay around this weakness triangle (making you switch out your build way too often), jumping off of buildings, and gliding midair is pretty boring. The only fun part is pushing off of one to get good speed. Then every enemy is tanky as hell. It's a misdirection for the series. 4 did stray a decent amount from Gen 3 and prior but the movement isn't trash

@mickey

1. "no vertical boosting" doesn't suck. it's different. gen 5 ACs are still just as vertical as they are horizontal - you only need to go about that verticality in a different way. you know what you can't do in gen 3? quick-boost (let alone in midair). you know what gen 5 has way more of than any other gen? tall structures. everywhere

2. even calling the three damage types a "weakness triangle" is extremely disingenuous because it brings up associations to shit like fire emblem. you have up to five weapon slots. if you can't accommodate for that, then this is all i gotta say

3. i'll ignore the building hopping bit because i just flat out disagree and don't have a point to support why beyond "it fun". i'll refer back to the previous image in response to you calling the enemies tanky. they're invariably made of construction paper when you hit their weakness (and usually two of them are responsive). even when you don't have the right toolkit, you've still got boost kicks which do insane amounts of damage regardless

4. i stuck with a pretty similar build throughout the whole game, usually restocking in missions for ammo refills and maybe to swap a weapon or two. never ran into an AC i found unreasonable to deal with. never found an enemy i found difficult to kill (besides the scavengers - they're very agile). most regular enemies either went down with minimal gunfire, a rocket, or a singular boost kick (shield cops were especially receptive to the latter)

i think you're just bad at gen 5 if i'm totally honest

@chandler it's not hard and I don't care shut up you're a pseudointellectual

@mickey no need to get all defensive chief. you came in here trying to tell me what's right and wrong in the first place. i didn't ever ask what your opinion was - and i don't mind that you expressed it - but receiving mine in turn is still a pretty implied thing

for the record, i don't think it takes a brain surgeon to understand this game. i just think the complaints about it are whiny and change-adverse. your response being the way it is just kinda cements that. furthermore i don't think that it's any more different from oldgen than 4th gen is - in fact i'd say it's truer to a game like ac1 than ac4 ever was

I simply listed why people don't like boring gameplay compared to older AC games. Angry ?

and I think you should expect others' opinions if you're enabling comments 💔

@mickey i do expect and welcome other opinions - yours included - but trying to shit on me for disagreeing with you just sounds whiny and asserts everything i've been saying. don't try to turn that the other way around lmao

Also you came after me first. I was initially just giving reasoning why the game bad, I didn't say a single thing about you. And the only thing you can do to defend this trash ass game is say that I'm bad at it when it's easily one of the most braindead AC games I've played. Womp womp

@mickey assuming you're not good at the game because you're complaining inaccurately about mechanics - most notably claiming that enemies are spongy - is not a personal attack

given your problems there i'd be inclined to assume you grinded order missions for team levels before playing the main story

I'm ok with games being different if they're good (see For Answer), but this game does very few things right

@catsopalle having seen your review i'd chalk it up to a 50/50 split between the performance of the ps3 version (the 360 runs at 30fps at almost all times) and what i can honestly only describe as being bad

tanks absolutely have their utility and if you find the game too fast-paced to be tactical, then i can only imagine you're approaching combat extremely carelessly

4 months ago

@chandler I know I have to activate scan mode to regain energy and I know I have to shoot recon units before engaging in combat, but it's often hard to tell what's happening anyway because the screen is constantly filled with explosions, effects and the framerate on PS3 is what it is. I wish ACV could be emulated decently with AC textures

4 months ago

@catsopalle i more so mean how you approach combat in general is important. 5th gen is all about having the right spacing and elevation. the first mission is pretty humbling in that aspect as you get absolutely obliterated with the default setup if you're not picking enemies off one-by-one. i also find that scan mode is better treated as your main viewing mode due to the amount of information it displays on top of the fast energy recharge. that and you're still able to melee while in scan mode

of course i cannot comment on the ps3 version - it's probably a bitch to aim precisely from afar when you're reaching drakengard 3 levels of framerate dipping, but like i said that's not an issue on 360. sadly that inconsistency is the case for a lot of multiplatform games in the 7th gen

i'll note that verdict day might be more your cup of tea - it is much, much more focused on AC vs AC battles. it lacks any grand-scale single player missions, but the story missions and order missions are of consistent quality and challenge for the most part

...again though - if you have a 360, it's much better to play it on that. especially since the servers are going down soon anyway
