gaslighting's everest. megafreaks convincing me this was the series peak had me telling everyone I knew how bad mega man sucked for two decades. I've already done more damage to the mega man brand than inafune ever could, and I was primed to do even more before I tried some of the other ones

sure, the robot master stages are mostly solid, but you'd need the most hexed, jinxed, and cursed grey matter on the planet to convince yourself normal people want to experience wily's castle in any capacity. the creases in your brain need to have been carved by unnaturally odious forces to sit there recommending this with a grin on your face while knowing sniper armours exist

boobeam comes up in conversation and MM2 guys go silent at the dinner table, start pushing their peas around the plate, and ask to be excused

if you love it so much then why don't you marry it

I like Mega Man 2 but it's unearned popularity ruined 9 and 10 and for that I can never forgive it

I would never say MM1 is outright better than 2, but I will say Yellow Devil never frustrated me as much as every boss in 2's Wily Castle has.

@girlnamedyou
what's the story there? I've maybe played half an hour of 9 and haven't touched 10 so I'm not too familiar

wily's castle and the way it crashes the pacing to a halt with some of the least fun stuff in either game puts MM1 over MM2 for me. didn't realize people didn't like yellow devil; once I memorized the pattern it ended up being one of the bosses I liked most in either game

Dunno about 10, but for 9 they were adamant about strictly keeping to 2 because it was the one with the most critical acclaim and love

Doubled-up comment because I didn't refresh in time WHOAAAAAAAAAA

But yea YD is infamous for how the pattern is designed alongside only being able to get one or two shots in, but honestly after the first few cycles you pick up on its flow. Helps that it pops up every now and then in later games, and you can't rarely abuse a tech similar to 1's Pause Break. Still tough to finesse, but that's part of the point against it.

I kept a "safe" comment because I haven't touched either in their original form since 2018 I wanna say, but I will say the first time I ever beat both I was certainly feeling one more... definitely think people exaggerate on its growing pains jank factor at least, and some of the wrinkles in it are more so interesting than not, like some of the weapons or the random ass score counter.

ah yeah, I had no idea. really curious about how I'll end up feeling about MM9 now

it's definitely an attrition fight but I think I was able to get it down to a little over 2 mins when I did the legacy collection's challenge mode, so it's not too too bad. little tricky for sure, but compared to stuff like boobeam or elecman's massive projectile hitbox it's nice to have something that mostly just asks you to remember a jump sequence

I agree that the growing pains / jank stuff is overstated. it's certainly messier in places, and has its weird quirks, but revisiting them back to back I never felt like MM2 was a massive jump in quality or execution. also a bit hard to be harsh on MM1's weapons when MM2 has the metal blade

it's a puzzle. a puzzle!! you just analyze the level and don't fuck up!!!! if you do you have to do it again!!!!!!! it's fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

once you memorize how to beat the boobeam trap it isn't that bad tbh, plus if you spam pause when the boobeams shoot, their bullets phase through you
goated review lmao
