A serviceable story with clunky, poor & repetitive gameplay, Assassin's Creed is the first game in the long running franchise.
The plot follows Desmond Miles, a bartender who has seemingly being kidnapped by a group of Scientists who force him to relive his ancestors experiences through a device call "the Animus".
Whilst the plot does start of slow and uninteresting, I did find myself becoming increasingly interested and immersed in it. Altair is basic but has a solid character arc and Al Mualim makes for an intriguing villain that is set up well.
The atmosphere and environments are also great. The soundtrack is surprisingly beautiful and the sound design in general, other than a couple of low bitrate voice lines, is pretty damn good.
But what really holds this game back is just how damn shallow the poorly done gameplay is. The parkour is clunky and unsatisfying, the combat is agonizingly bland and the stealth is practically useless.
I understand this game is good for the time, and I'm not saying I had a bad time playing it. In fact, I will probably revisit it again in due time. But unfortunately this game is held back by time and calling it anything better than fine would feel dishonest.
