Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Completed (review)
for everything i said about the gameplay i think the biggest problem with this game is actually the 5 support limit because i want to read ALL of them but the game wont LET me!!!!!!!!

I kept swapping between MK and sorc but ended up finishing the game as flameshroud MA. i dont love the combat mechanically quite as much as some but i *do* love how differently all the vocations can play. i kinda regret not playing warrior but it feels tricky to swap around later on and hold onto good gear for all the different vocations.

considering the easy dunk on this game is that the story sucks I've been really appreciating the worldbuilding this time around. a story focused around perseverance and will isnt exactly original but i appreciate how that lets it subvert the 'chosen one' trope, and setting it against (worldly) antagonistic forces that embody nihilism and 'giving up' works quite well i think. also a lot of random npc dialogue leans one way or the other, a lot of it in the endgame sections is quite good as well

bitterblack is fun but the stat progression left me feeling pretty sour. doing next to no damage to most things past the gazer, having to play the gear gacha with my scant amount of rift crystals since nobody is hiring my overlevelled pawn in the year 2024, having to leave bbi to dragonforge it and then upgrade it again before it does meaningful damage, then getting a new upgrade that beats it from the word go. I beat daimon 1 but didn't stick around for the second fight, felt like i'd had my fill and I still put 50(!) hours into this save. hope the sequel comes out soon!

i played this one time at the start of the month and one time at the end and both times i was having an okay enough time but felt like my time could really be better spent doing something else. i might drag myself over the finish line just because i know how to get to the proper endgame stuff (and i can go start that whenever i want), but idk if im gonna be happy about it

very upset that the first case in this game that made me feel like i wasnt just going through the motions is the same one with the pedophile love triangle. final case is sick, i know rise from the ashes was written after the trilogy but farewell my turnabout kind of just feels like that but better? which makes the former feel really weird in hindsight. edgeworth's new smirk is awesome

all this said, i still struggle a great deal with actually *playing* these games since i forget things as soon as i read them half the time and there's a lot of times it calls back to earlier testimony/investigation convos that i can't look back on. it gets really aggravating knowing that i can hardly get through a single part of a case without having to fall back on hints

it's far too easy, to the point where at a certain point battles just become a formality (what's even the point of *levelling up* when i can one-shot just about every non-boss encounter anyway). it's funny and entertaining, but doesn't spend quite as much time being funny and entertaining as i expected. low res prerendered graphics are still the best looking thing ever. smithy is awesome

one of those that helps me take a step back and remember that video games are creations made by people. it's a game about exploring abstract worlds that allude to experiences of pain, isolation and escapism that SOMETIMES bashes you over the head with The Point with all the subtlety of a freight train. and the gameplay kinda blows and really starts feeling like it gets in the way later on, but its clearly made out of love for the 2d zeldas rather than just having Video Game Bits put in there because it's a Video Game. the soundscape is REALLY good. on the visual side its kinda funny because it's got that awkward amateurish feel that you see a lot in these games, but unlike most of them it's still really pretty to actually look at.

very messy game and i think that's cool. kinda made me get more interested in playing rpgmaker games or even fangames which is funny because it's neither of those. great game for autistic weirdos with odd fixations who stuggle to make connections (me)
Ys: Book I & II
Ys: Book I & II
Completed
this was the only good way i could find to play old ys 2 and to get it to work i had to contend with mednafen default controls (numpad buttons??) and input some password i found on the internet like im playing pokemon mystery dungeon so that i didnt have to replay the whole of ys 1. felt like all that was worth mentioning.

anyway feels easier and harder than ys 1. easier because the combat is kinda pathetically baby easy considering mashing the fireball button kills everything effortlessly and makes you not have to engage with the actually interesting part of ys combat. epecially with that one item that turns it into a heat seeking missile for some reason. also most of the time my mp doesn't go down when i press it. but otoh the levels are labyrinthine to honestly a hilarious degree, it's basically what the game *is* at that point. i certainly still am playing a game from the 80s! i quite like it. i like these games more than i thought i would

i also had to load someone's save for the final boss because i didn't want to grind. but also on the save i loaded i was multihitting him when on my actual save he was just warping instantly so it was even easier than i expected. really strange

will have to wait till i'm done to give any meaningful thoughts on this one i think! it's certainly interesting. and the soundtrack and general ✨vibe✨ is immaculate as im coming to expect from these two.

probably worth saying, but i had a pretty major Brain Moment right after a signficant story moment and wasnt really able to do much except mindlessly play dragons dogma for a week. so that's probably marred the way i'm engaging with the game's story to no real fault off the game itself. sad but it is what it is
