not even done yet but jesus christ this is so miserable, i am literally only able to do the droll sidequesting msq content by turning my brain off for an hour or two at a time and skipping every line of dialog because if i invest any more thought than that into this game i feel like i might never want to play another video game in my life. it is insane how dragon quest 10's first version bodies everything arr sets out to do effortlessly when it came out a year earlier and also wasn't a second draft like a realm reborn is. if ff14 ends up being something like xenoblade 2 where it doesn't even get nearly good enough to make up for how much time you waste to get to the "good" part i am so sincerely never playing a game on suggestion of my friends again.

my au ra is cute at least though

as somebody who played ff14 for thousands of hours, and most post-ARR content when it launched, i'd really only recommend it to somebody who wants both an easily approachable MMO to play with/make friends on and a somewhat decent RPG that has cool moments, but takes awhile to get there and never fully lives up to its non-MMO FF brethren (for context the reason I and many others even started playing in ARR/HW/Stormblood was because it was the Least Bad MMO on the market lol -- it wasn't until Shadowbringers that the story actually started to get such critical praise, and even then it never quite shakes off its content-focused baggage)

the second most insane part about final fantasy xiv is that people will insist that slogging through 100+ hours of a pointedly bad game is worth it for when it gets good. the first most insane part about final fantasy xiv is that they're right

me looking at the 10 dollars to just skip a realm reborn and watch a recap on the table:

heavensward was rightfully lavished with plenty of praise for its writing well before shadowbringers was out, but i agree with theia in that a realm reborn only really holds appeal for enjoyers of mmorpg early game. anyhow, it was strides better than 1.0, but they were still finding their feet and i would say only really took off running with the final quests of the arr storyline (literally the event you play through before the credits roll). in some ways, i feel like heavensward is actually where ffxiv peaked (at least for me), even if shadowbringers may actually be a bit better. (i can't comment on further expansions because by the end of shadowbringers i was just done with the content treadmill going through the same motions over and over again... but that was after over 3 thousand hours logged. i'd like to catch up with it eventually.) going by what you evidently like, i want to say that sticking with it will be worth it to you. but i also have not played dragon quest x and i'm jealous...! and i can't say whether having that perspective would have changed my feelings about ffxiv if i'd come to it as you are. perhaps some time i'll finally be able to play dqx and realize i never would have made it through arr, either, if dqx had been available to me.
