good. like reeeaallly fucking good. i cant believe that this video game is real. it probably shouldnt be, let alone THIS. GOOD.
as a humungous fan of D&D and other ttrpgs, never have i felt a game truly has been able to capture that freedom of choice and free flow creativity offered by tabletop games. being a video game there of course have to be limits but they are so far and above with choices and variant sequences aplenty that it feels silly to call it any version of “limited”.
the sheer quantity of quests, unique dialogue and interesting encounters is already staggering enough but these crazy guys somehow managed to back it all up with unbelievably high quality, in the writing, acting, visual design, and fun combat and mechanics. the translation of fifth edition gameplay to video game form was done so well and felt very familiar to someone who might otherwise feel daunted by this type of RPG. it feels unreal for a game to not only be so feature complete but rich and teeming with secrets that beg to be explored and experienced.
i spent around 90 hours in this game and i know for a fact that i missed tons of content. not because I was trying to but because theres just so much of it!!! its unreal and fantastic. my favorite companions were karlach, shadowheart and astarion, and getting to experience their story and arcs was truly phenomenal. these characters feel like people and getting to see them grow and change and make meaningful choices is something that feels games can pull off so well. not to mention that it all has MULTIPLAYER?? i played through a big chunk of this with my wife and it is so fun to roleplay two separate characters and its crazy to me that it works so well. also the character creation and progression is awesome. also the map and world design is so great. also the villians are so fun. also also also also there are so many things that i have to shut up at some point but man.
