Breath of the Wild is undoubtedly an incredible achievement of a video game, reinventing the open world in a way that is genuinely impressive. But ultimately this game feels closer to a proof of concept than a complete vision, one that ages more and more especially next to this year's Elden Ring, a game that takes many of the core concepts of Breath of the Wild and improves on basically every single one. It's hard for me to play this game when the things it does the best have now been done much better by another game.

Despite the really great exploration and world design, the more I played Breath of the Wild the more I became bored and disinterested. The combat is generally uninteresting, and often extremely annoying and frustrating as you begin to play inventory management more than the game itself. The story is quite honestly bad, which wouldn't be much of a problem if so much time wasn't dedicated to it. Most of the shrines are honestly pretty poor and would feel like a complete waste of time if it wasn't for spirit orbs. The devine beasts are all very underwhelming. And ultimately the intrigue and curiosity I had with the game eventually just faded.

I completely understand why people love this game and by all accounts I should too, but it just became a really dull experience by the end. This is definitely my most controversial gaming opinion by far, and maybe in the future I'll come back and really love it but for now it's just a 5/10 for me.
