While i really liked the first 3 hours of this game with its immediate freedom and very appealing combat system, the rest of it immediately collpases in on itself and becomes disgustingly unfun.

Go into this dark ass labyrinth and fight enemies way too strong for you. Find a random seed and somehow know that you have to eat it to progress the game. Dont fight that werewolf bat cause if you dont have a SPECIFIC sword you have to get by eating a seed then leaving then finding Reah then talking to Reah then giving Reah her harmonica then going to two trees and watching a cutscene, then youre fucked. Go back into the awful mines that's layout is akin to a 4 year old's art class project and fight the bat with the 3 frames of vulnerability.

Hoorah.... the mines are now over. Now i can have fun?!?!??

Wrong. Go to zepik village and run around in circles and talk to feena then leave then come back and talk to feena then leave then do 3 backflips then recieve a psychic premonition that you should probably ask grandma to read those random ass books youve been lugging around all game then leave then come back then feena should be there and THEN you will be told you can enter darm tower

And darm tower is where the game goes to rot and die. Awful layout. You have to find specific gear sets in order to progress, which are pretty much impossible to locate in this horrible labyrinth. No walk-through can help you here. Im stuck on this floating head boss that no one has ever had a problem with apparently cause i cant find any help. I do no damage. Im assuming i need a special sword 100 floors down from where i am that i need to backtrack to get, but i dont want to.

A shame because this was really free of all the issues i had with 80s-90s games but then it all fell off as soon as the mines happened. Hopefully ys 2 is better, for now i quit.

Also the achievements on steam for this game are hot garbage.

From what I recall, Ys II has some confusing dungeon layouts near the end, so you might not want to jump to that right away. Maybe you'd have more luck with Dawn of Ys?

@Drax im fine with a few segments that arent the best if the rest of the game is good, i hear the bosses are way better in 2 which makes me a bit more hopeful for it. Is dawn of ys the 3rd entry? I dont believe ive heard of that one

Dawn of Ys is the 4th entry, but for the most part the games are self-contained (though you should play Ys II after Ys I and most fans recommend playing Ys Origin after Ys I + II). That's not to be confused with Mask of the Sun, which is the 4th entry but created by Tonkin House (while Dawn of Ys was created by Hudson Soft): the two were basically created around the same time, but from what I've heard, most folks recommend Dawn of Ys instead. Also, don't confuse Dawn of Ys with Memories of Celceta, which is the remake of the 4th canonical game in the series for Vita/Windows/PS4, but takes most of its inspiration from Mask of the Sun instead and is often considered one of the more middling entries in Ys. Tldr: Ys remakes/different versions can get pretty confusing

The bosses in Ys II Chronicles tended to be closer to bullet hells than bump combat, since it has more of a focus on magic than Ys I, but I tend to agree that Ys II's bosses were more fun than Ys I (with the exception of the worm boss, hate that one). And yeah I agree, Dark Fact sucks, even when you've got the proper strat. I don't have any problem telling you exactly what you have to do, just let me know if you want to fight him again because I don't want to give spoilers without your permission.

@Drax woah, i had to read that first paragraph a few times to understand it lol. Thank you, if i have fun with ys 2 i might move onto that since orgins was my first ys game

Im not even at dark fact D: i wish i was since at least theres help for him... im at the 2 floating head guys you have to go through a mirror labyrinth to reach. Im assuming i need a better sword or better equipment (floor 21 of darm tower, using all the silver items) but i backtracked a bit and i cant find anything. I have no idea what to do

@curse i dont know what most of those words mean but i didnt even really care for origins that much, i hated being stuck in the tower the whole game and the bosses stunk but i think ys bosses might just be bad.

Sorry for the double ping, the formatting got messed up.

Some minor spoilers here for anyone who hasn't beaten Ys I, you've been warned:
I looked up a guide and here's what you'll need: the Battle Armor on floor 19, the Fire Sword on floor 20, and the Battle Shield on floor 15. Assuming you've got all that (more specific instructions in the guide above), you have to beat the two floating heads by attacking the correct/vulnerable one at any given time. There's no visual tell, so you have to bump into them to see which one does no damage and which one does: also, they swap positions all the time for which one is vulnerable so keep that in mind. It's an annoying boss for sure, but you can do this.

@curse i like the ys combat the most, and the tower was fine but i just wish there was more exploration. Being stuck in the tower made me feel claustrophobic and there was nothing else to really do besides continue the story. And the bosses were extremely hard for me, i didnt like them at all. Felt like it took 3 years to do any significant damage.

Ys 1 was great till the mines, really loved the bump mechanic and the way it was visually presented. Plus the music was great but yeah, if theres a game that combines ys 1's freedom with origins dungeon design then thatd probably be best

@Drax aw hell no im not going back to floor 15 for that... the boss itself is just mildly annoying but i hateee how the game lets you skip cruical items like that. The darm tower has such an awful layout too i dunno if i could even make it back. I dont think ill be picking this back up, ill just watch a youtube video of the dark fact fight or something. Thanks for your help though, very much appreciated

Completely understandable. On the bright side, you won't have to fight Dark Fact anymore! I was still seething after somehow beating Dark Fact on my 5th try...
