Despite the game being self-aware of the fact that it's a crappy spin-off fanservice game, it's not saved from being a crappy spin-off fanservice game. While I enjoyed the aspects of the game that add to the Danganronpa lore enough to see the game through to completion, the gameplay isn't really all that interesting and the controls would have felt outdated even at the time of release. At its best, the writing labors to be funny through being edgy and meta, and at its worst, it's straight up disturbing and problematic without having any sort of punch. The few moments that do hit, such as the relationship between the two protagonists, have no chance at redeeming the rest of the game.

Completing this game confirmed what I had already suspected-you don't need to play this game to see the best of what the Danganronpa series has to offer. Save yourself the embarrassment of having your friends ask you why you are playing a game titled "Ultra Despair Girls" outside of an incognito tab and skip it.
