Finally got around to a FF game, and one of its most popular titles at that.

I was genuinely surprised at the storytelling. For a game that is, as of this writing, 25 years old, I was impressed at the efficient storytelling through its flashbacks across multiple characters. To me, this was my favorite aspect about FF7.

The gameplay is decent. Once I got into the groove of timing my attacks against the enemies I found myself engaged.

I was lukewarm about the exploring. The tedious backtracking and finding obscure areas without linear progression to continue the story was at times frustrating. Full disclosure, I mentioned in my SMT III review that I prefer having my hand held for progression, and I'm not faulting FF7 for not accomodating for a weak gamer like myself. But it can't be helped that I still didn't quite enjoy that aspect, and when it was a big part of the game, there were long periods of unsatisfying gameplay for me.

TL:DR, I enjoyed this JRPG classic, especially for its storytelling, and I look forward to playing more FF in the future! I'll probaly lean towards games after 7.
