With my first completed FE game being 3H, I didn't need Engage to be like 3H, and I didn't want to compare Engage to 3H, but because it still retained similar elements, I can say that FE Engage is an inferior 3H.
The gameplay outside of the battles was pretty boring. I dreaded the time I spent to be at the Somniel because the social sim in this game is so hollow. I much preferred the setting of the monastery as it allowed me to be more immersed in the gameloop as well as the characters.
With that said, the battles were still fun, and I had a better time playing this game while skipping the story and minimizing time at Somniel.
Maybe FE fans who have much longer history with this franchise would have gotten more of a kick out of fighting alongside heroes of the past, but me personally, not much making Engage stand out. I'd much rather replay 3H, and I hope the next installment is more traditional FE so I can have the traditional experience.
