I kind of wish the Switch Online app told me how much time I spent on this game because man, it kept me entertained for ages! But ultimately I have to admit that there’s a point where even if the game is great my poor number hating brain goes “fuck all this counting, man, I don’t know what’s going on here. Please, let’s stop.” For me it happened around unlocking Wario Ultra and trying those puzzles.

I don’t really consider that a huge knock against the game’s quality though since there’s a whole lot of puzzles to get through before that point. There’s more content for the real picrossheads out there! I can be sated with what I have.

My one actual criticism is not enough actual Mario content. I feel like the old school Mario sprites would’ve made great Picross puzzles, but at the same time I think this game came out at that weird point in time when the NES Mario sprites were too new to be nostalgic and not new enough to be cool. There were some new hotness Wario Land enemies, at least, and the art that is included is very charming, especially when it comes with animations. I don’t know, maybe there’s more Mario content in Wario Ultra but like, I’m kinda done, honestly… which is kind of a shame, because it’s the perfect game to play for a bit when your Switch battery is <15%.

Switch Online does keep track of how much time you spent, doesn't it? If nothing else, you can go into the SNES - Nintendo Switch Online software on the Switch system itself and sort by total play time (tracked in minutes).

Otherwise, I think we're on the same page regarding this game for the most part. It's not bad, it's not amazing - it's just way too much of a kinda good thing.

Oh dang really? I should give that a try. Anyway yeah, I definitely agree with you on that. I don’t know, I guess I like that it’s there for supreme puzzle masters who like that kind of thing but I’m not about that life. It kind of hit the point where I needed to look up the solution to figure out what direction I was even supposed to take and the whole fun is seeing everything coming together. Still despite that I’m super glad it got included on Switch Online despite not being localized at all!

I've been trying to learn and take on the idea that you don't have to finish all the video games you play as long as you get meaningful experiences out of your playtime (if only because there's so much else out there in the world, not even just games) but Picross is the one thing I literally can't do that with - it's the reason I'd considered it a kind of addiction personally, if only borderline in that I don't see myself going crazy without starting new Picross games and going through the cycle all over again
I think I should learn to enjoy Picross in moderation from here on...

Yeah I get you there. I kind of felt it with the Picross stuff I’ve been messing around with so far but I’m stops and starts… I feel like when I start to get frustrated enough I wind up taking a break, but the fact that this particular game didn’t want you to speedrun all its puzzles made it a little easier for me to try and keep pushing through until I decided I just wasn’t having fun anymore. I think part of that might’ve just been that I viewed it as a pick up and put down game to play when I needed something to do for five or so minutes instead of something I wanted to do for hours at a time, you know?
