Fresh off the bat a great game with such an eerie atmosphere with it's tight spaces and sound design coupled with piecing together the story as it progresses, going in almost completely blind. One of the titles that gives the survival horror genre such a strong word of mouth, up there with the likes of Resident Evil and The Last of Us to name a few.

The core mechanics of dismembering enemies instead of them just being regular bullet sponges is such an innovative and cool concept that is weirdly super satisfying which gives the dread walking around corners a layer of enjoyment too.

I think this game prizes its mechanics and gameplay front and center over anything else in the game (e.g. the narrative.) It's really, mainly, what kept me playing it. The story is interesting in itself but the eerie atmosphere of it is what really elevates it because the characters I didn't really feel despite the narrative being competent in itself.

Curious to see what the remake brings to the table in the future, but for now I might just play the sequel and the threequel. I think, given time and if the developers played their cards right, Dead Space might turn out to be one of my all time favourite video game franchises.
