The way this game is talked about, you expect it to be utter garbage, probably close to the likes of Devil May Cry 2 or any other game with a horrible reputation, but... damn, I actually had a lot of fun with this.

By Devil May Cry standards, sure, it's not "fun hard" or anything, it doesn't offer too much of a challenge and the bosses are way too easy for a DmC game, but when you look at it outside of the namesake and switch your brain off, it's a pretty great game. Notably the gameplay and segments of the story is what made this for me and I think it has great replayability value too.

I found the gameplay really fucking satisfying, I loved varying combos with different weapons on the fly and absolutely fucking shit up. Admittely, the combat is probably a bit too easy and the difficulty difference doesn't change too much. I tested by replaying multiple levels on Human (Hardcore), Devil Hunter, Devil Hunter (Hardcore), Nephilim and Nephilim (Hardcore) and there practically wasn't much of a difference at all, especially in boss fights. Honestly, this didn't break anything for me though because the combat was still fun as fuck so I didn't really give a shit either way if it was making me struggle or not.

Everyone talks about how "cringey" the story is. I think there's some pretty out there moments, some shit that is definitely pretty edgy but, like... it feels more campy to me than cringe. It was cheesy as fuck and I loved it, I loved what they were trying to go for too by making the story a lot more personal in some aspects, trying to convey a message which is something this series isn't really well known for in most respects, which is fine in and of itself, but I really do appreciate what Ninja Theory was trying to pull off here. Dante was honestly... fine? As a coming of age story, it's totally believable and it honestly wouldn't be far off for Dante to have acted like this under different circumstances and by the end point I can definitely see this version growing into the Dante we all know and love in his own future. Sure, the take on Vergil isn't something we're used to, but it comes together at the end and feels almost pretty natural to his character, especially if you go ahead and play Vergil's Downfall which admittely makes him pretty edgy, but it's an interesting take. I think that if you can make it work and the idea is original enough, go for it. That being said, I actually really enjoyed the chemistry between Dante and Vergil you don't quite see that often in the other games so that was pretty special itself to me.

So, in the end... I think I liked this, a lot more than I initially thought I would, too. I can see where a lot of people are coming from when they criticise this game and that's fair enough, I might even agree on most points, but this is probably a guilty pleasure of mine now and kudos to anyone else who just has fun with it instead of completely negative about everything.
