As many have already stated, Super Mario Bros. 3 is (likely) the best game for the NES. There's really no shortchanging the degree to which this improves upon the original two games with the limitations of the console tested to entertain and oftentimes torment the player through eight (now formulaic) worlds to save transformed kings and an asshole princess who cannot appreciate all the effort put into her safety. Between the awesome sprites and environments, enduring score, and addicting gameplay—refined in a manner to benefit traversal—through platforming, puzzles, minigames, enemy traps, and easy-to-understand boss battles,, this third sequel is a classic in the series and in gaming overall because it, for whatever faults lie in difficulty by cheap and easy deaths, perfects what Super Mario Bros. established five years earlier. That said, Toad is a scam artist; I fucking lined those three slides up only twice.
