A good but overrated game.

Super Mario Bros Wonder has the ambition I have been hungry for from 2D Mario for the past 15 years. However. while the quality is never sub-par, the creativity shown in the trailers which I was sold on rarely hits expectations. The way the game was advertised, as having no deadline, having countless ideas fed into it... this is the same game they've been relitigating since 2006 but mostly good and with a dozen or so good ideas and a couple of lazy ones. Wonder felt sold to me as a way of reinventing a stage. In practice it means a lot of the time an extra act to it. Or everything moves fast. Or slow.

I'm writing this review now because I've just beaten Bowser for the first time and, while I've enjoyed the game plenty, from the 95/100 reviews I was honestly expecting a rug pull. Maybe I'm Zelda-style only HALFWAY through! Maybe there's so much more content.

There isn't.

This is a good game. It's a 7, maybe 8, out of 10. Not a 10.

Agreed, on world 4 rn and I'm feeling a 7.5 maybe an 8 if it gets better later

Good review! I think the 10/10s come from recency and Nintendo bias, I'm interested to see how the reviews will look like in a week or two. Also @NOWITSREYNTIME17 I just finished the W4 castle earlier today and the game is starting to feel kind of boring? I mean it's still fun but it doesn't "hit the same" as the beginning anymore I'd say.
@lemonstrade I'm nearing the end of world 4 soon and I kinda see what you mean but honestly there were a couple of levels in world 4 that actually were my favorites. I think besides my couple issues with the game, it was mostly world 3 that I thought was kinda mediocre overall, hoping it picks up soon and becomes harder but I doubt it. Ah well, still fun overall I think

Overall, my experience has been incredibly positive so far. Time will tell ultimately for everyone where this game truly stands of course, but I think it's quite remarkable. I never expect challenge out of Mario until the end, much like Kirby, but I've been challenged a handful of times in Mario Wonder so far. World 3 was the lowest point for me so far, but World 4 seems incredibly promising, so we'll have to wait and see. Easily the best game I've played this year so far though, and where it lands in the 2D Mario games for me, it's somewhere past Mario 3, but still not even close to World, though if every level from here on out blows me away it might, but I doubt it.
@quenttheslayer can confirm world 4 was the highlight of the game so far besides world 1
