We'll never see a game quite like this again -- a singular artistic vision, given space to breathe, to exist confidently outside of any of the conventions of its day, that's also a first-party big-budget blockbuster that pushes its hardware to the absolute limit.

Shadow of the Colossus brings the PS2 to its knees, and wrenches from it an experience that still rivals any of today's cinematic AAA offerings. (I haven't played the PS3 remaster OR the PS4 remake, yet, but I know that something will feel lost if the framerate isn't crawling to single digits during the game's unparalleled setpieces. You need to feel like the seams of the universe are barely holding; like the colossus' sword crashing down next to you is literally shaking the internals of the hardware you're playing the game on! 5 to 20 fps is fucking canon.).

I could write 10,000 words, but I'm tired, so I'll keep it short. This without-a-doubt deserves its status as one of the greatest games of all time. It's a certain work of art. There is one (1) less-than-phenomenal colossus fight -- sound off in the comments if you can guess which.

Patience is its core game mechanic.

Hail Dormin.

Yeah, the bird is pretty slow. I think it makes up for the waiting with double the spectacle though.

Wasn’t thinking of the bird! I like the bird.

If I had to guess just based off of personal experience, it would either be Barba (bearded 6th colossus) or Pelagia (island 12th colossus) that I would say are potential low points in the game. Barba's encounter feels a bit too simple right off the back of the 5th colossus fight with the bird, and Pelagia did test my patience given that it can take a bit of time swimming around to the back and then directing it to a stone platform.
The bird was definitely one of my favorites, good review

@Drax I would definitely put Barba toward the bottom if I were ranking, but I still think he's overall a good encounter. Hiding and then seeing him bend over for the first time is quite a moment. Pelagia is flat-out cool, I dig how different he feels from the others.

I can respect that, Pelagia ranks near the bottom for me but even so I do appreciate how steering Pelagia feels completely different from any other colossi. My only other guess for the less than phenomenal colossus fight would be Phaedra? I've heard a lot of people having trouble getting the horse to look into the tunnel so you can climb up the back (and this was an issue I had during my first playthrough as well), though I figured out that it's easier to proc this by making Pelagia walk up the hill and look into the entrance from there, it wasn't too bad in future runs.
I figured it was the 2nd to last one

@Drax that’s a good guess and I did have that problem with the tunnel, but I liked that one because (if I’m remembering correctly) it’s the first that introduces the environment as part of the solution, which is neat. It’s def near the bottom though.

@NOWITSREYNTIME17 ding ding ding. This is the one. Leading him to the platforms and watching him shuffle around to get into the exact right position to step on them sucks. And then, I dunno if there’s a way around this, but he shakes constantly and violently, so I fell off sooo many times and had to repeat that broken ass platform step. It’s not terrible or anything but, for my money, it’s the worst of them
Yeah I agree then, at least when I played back in 2022 it was hands down my least fav as well
