with me starting to play the Kingdom Hearts series I couldn't wait to try out the first game because everyone was saying how KH2 is the best video game ever made like christians telling you about jesus. i think that this game is... ok, but really solid! however, the flaws were what made me not really vibe with the first entry. first of all, the gummi ship controls SUCK. literally no point in customizing your gummi ship too when the levels are stupidly easy. second, the game tries to be both platformer and action jrpg where you had some obnoxious worlds like the tarzan one (even made a boss around it too) where the platforming is not good. third, most bosses in this game arrange from extremely easy to pushover to obnoxious (including the final boss) so the experience of having an actual good boss fight is rare. some worlds are just awful like atlantica which is just straight up a water level that murders some of your useful tools like guard or dodge roll.

on the bright side though the game is pretty fun in terms of combat. mp is a simple, rewarding system for being aggressive on enemies and the skills provided for mp gain are nice. very straightforward combat with obvious counters for certain types of enemies giving you a hard time.

it's very clunky for its first game and even if it had things i didnt like i pretty much like its simple combat that kept me going through the story and dumb bosses.
