in fact there's a lot to be said about how this whole series belongs to the genre of post-9/11 entertainment that very sincerely treats the space us military as an overall morally positive and well-intentioned institution and that's just the funniest bit. but mostly it's just a boring nothing cover shooter

I've always played these games going for the most anti-authoritarian path and being generally very critical of every figure of power, militar or political, and their selfishness but damn, had I not do that the game would've still taken every plot beat with a straight-face, wouldn't it? :/ The trilogy just got a lot less fun
yeah, exactly. i'm not even knocking the bioware writing staff as a whole, i'm sure they were for the most part capable and talented people, but mass effect as a whole just didn't have good enough direction and vision to make this work. the first game promised something really cool and then they used it for the game equivalent of boring action movies
