Imagine if Neon Genesis Evangelion had a laughably bad story, the voice acting was a joke and it was a redundant backtracking hack n' slash for the sake of being a pain in the ass.

The anime aesthetic of the characters doesn't help neither. They look disturbing and don't fit with the rest of the game, which looks homogeneous and dark. In addition, they don't look good by any means.

The combat is not bad. You can handle some weapons (I only used the sniper once because it was mandatory for a mission) and you have this mixture between close and far combat that gave it some deepness to the mechanics. The enemies variety that this game offer are only 2, which are too little. Keeping that aside, it's entertaining and one of the very few reasons, along with the short length of the game and its solid atmosphere, that kept me playing.

I cannot put into words how embarrassingly bad is the story. I cannot believe that Kojima was responsible of making MGS2 and this game. They are pretty much the opposite in terms of story quality (I might add that the same goes for the combat, because the one in MGS2 is horrendous). I would be repeating that in loop because, again, it's like if someone watched Evangelion and tried to make the most hideous parody ever made. The unnecessary dramatic moments (the Viola - Jupiter moment is incredible), the "y do i have to do this :(" and, of course, the "i'm the hero and i have to do this for this person that i've been knowing for about 5 minutes" moments. All of this accompanied by a shallow and voice generated-like acting voice that, along with the appearance of the characters, made me question if this was intended as a joke or not.

Let's not forget about the brilliant idea of making a Metroidvania out of a hack n' slash game divided by areas, in which you will have to guess which of them have relevant items for moving on in the story. The best part is that you have to do exactly the same as you did the first time you went there, so you will be basically wasting your time. What a relief, right?

I still think that this game was a demo seller of MGS 2 because selling the demo standalone would be kind of a money grabber (how times have changed). However, I played this game in order to be ready to play the 2nd part in VR, which looks like a far more consistent and serious game. I do hope that the story improves and the combat implements some more elements to it because it has the potential to be something good.
