Merry New Years, Backloggd dot com. I wanted to finish Super Mario Bros. Wonder for my final review of 2023, and I did... everything I wanted to. I realize I'm still missing a single level, solely because I really do not feel like going back and collecting all the flower coins I missed.
I wasn't excited for Wonder when it was first revealed. I thought it looked nice, definitely, but it wasn't something I was actively looking forward to. As with several instances of this situation, the game came out, and that changed.

because they made toadette playable, i think she's awesome. they really did not want anyone to know that, either, like wth is their problem

It's a weird case where I definitely enjoyed my time decently enough, but it was never something I wanted to run through for any longer than like... an hour or two? Absolutely none of the levels were all that compelling (aside from the musical ones i liked those (◕‿◕)) and, while they were cool to see at first, the wonder flowers soon just start to feel like nothing more than a quick gimmick to try and patch up the rest of whatever uninteresting level it was thrown into.
Badges were fun, I always appreciate more movement options in platformers, but I found myself only ever sticking to two of them throughout the whole game, aside from the times I'd be forced into one, or the rare occasion that I needed easier water mobility. The movement in Wonder is nice as well, if I'm already talking about it. I like the sort of return to form they tried to go for, momentum kinda feels a bit more like how P-Speed used to work, and even the smaller things such as being able to throw items up into the air again. It is fun to maneuver, good job.

I like where they went with this. Wonder feels new, without feeling... New. The style is cute and expressive, the world is nice, and I really liked all the new voices for some of the characters. It's a solid first try, and I'm glad they actually are trying instead of sticking to what works like they had been for, like, 13 years.

seriously though she's not on the boxart, she wasn't in the trailers- oh but Nabbit is, the Yoshis are, Daisy is now come on Nintendo you don't have to hide the girl Toad from us.
