RPG that copies Final Fantasy VI in a LOT of ways. I've heard the game is solid, but the start is unbearably boring. There's a reason why most RPGs try to get you a second party member ASAP, because fighting a bunch of enemies one-at-a-time is just not fun.

Playing Through My Evercade Collection Part 9: Piko Interactive Collection 1

For what's essentially a bootleg JRPG that somehow wrangled its way into an official english translation, its not bad. I mean its essentially just a copy of Final Fantasy/Breath of Fire, down to outright ripping a few sprites here and there in downright cheeky fashion and it does so pretty competently, albeit without much of the polish and shine that makes those games as playable as they are.

Mechanics wise, it uses a pretty basic turn based system, the plot is roundabout there but nothing to speak of and the characters are rather flat, owing mostly to the translation giving off a weird flat vibe overall. Basically im trying to say its about as basic and playable as a generic JRPG can be, albeit one that takes a little too long to actually move about but at the same time is a little too easy to provide any real challenge.

Can you tell im struggling to actually describe this game properly? I know I had a bit of fun at the very least.

A final fantasy clone of sorts with no real hook besides that. Impressive for an unlicensed game at least, and the start of the story shows promise, but it quickly devolves into a stock 'collect the maguffins' plot afterwards. Too easy, too slow - I'd say the graphics are really nice but they are traced/referenced from other SNES RPG's, kinda feels like cheating.

Piko Interactive is selling this unedited on Steam and consoles, which is crazy to me? There are just flat-out stolen assets in here? I don't think they touched or edited them at all

Completed on Evercade Piko Collection 1 - I believe this originated as a Taiwanese bootleg back in the 90s and has since been picked up by an actual publisher. At first it seems like a pretty standard JRPG, with turn based combat, standard towns and villages as well as other areas to fight baddies. It wasn't long before I realised this was directly ripping off Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy, even using similar if not the same ones for certain areas and battles, as well as certain enemy sprites etc. But all that just adds to the charm.

Yes it's a straightforward, typical 90s JRPG with nonsensical story about warring countries, but it was a lot of fun to play, in spite of the amount of enemies that are kicking about at any one time. There may not be random battles, but they always come after you, and they respawn when you go into the next screen.

Again, it has the typical weapon, equipment and magic system. It was basically JRPG 101, and took me around 15-17 hours to beat so wasn't very demanding of my time and I could dip in and out of it over the course of a few weeks.

A lot of fun despite itself.
