Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of the Abyss also known as HotA is a fan-made full scale add-on for Heroes of Might and Magic III, designed to continue the classical Heroes 3 add-on series of RoE/AB/SoD. The aim of the project is to create an add-on for Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death with lots of new features. The main focus of add-on is the quality of every single aspect of the modded game. This includes the careful fixes of the original game balance, removal of the graphical imperfections left by the developer, and of course, a huge amount of new content, like new campaigns, new map objects and even a new playable faction - The Cove. The project pretends to be fully lore-wise and keeps connection with the original Might and Magic universe.

The best example of gameplay loops I can think of. A very relaxing game when played in isolation, the loop of exploration > rewards > level > clear enemy camps > items > conquer > explore is genius in simplicity and multifaceted in execution, and all the factions offer at least one good reason to play them. Add in some depth in regards to what heroes, upgrades, build orders, etc. are necessary for matchups and maps and you get a very simple to understand yet intricately mechanical strategy game, which is the best you can ask for. HOTA is a much welcome expansion, seamlessly integrating with the base game, at this point it's pretty much a stark upgrade over the base game, though balance is still inherently wonky.

best single player campaign out of them all, legit forces you to strategise. this game is overall more comepetively-oriented, so if you wanna mess with broken strategies, just use SoD single player. but in general, this is a fan project, and these always deserve all the praise, especially since this one nails the style so well.
