Shadows of Darkness is the fourth Quest for Glory game. It is a journey into the land of Mordavia - a setting influenced by Eastern Europe, particularly its Slavic areal. The hero had just begun to enjoy his victory in Tarna, when a spell zapped him into parts unknown, without a weapon, items, or even a source of light. Shortly after finding his way out of the dark cave, the hero meets a mysterious woman named Katrina. He traverses the swamps in the dark forest and finally reaches the town. However, the town is also engulfed by a foreboding atmosphere, and the hero cannot allow himself to relax. He must find out what is going on, why the town inhabitants are so hesitant and reluctant to help him, and what horrors are lurking outside of its walls. Life has never been quite so dangerous for our hero. He'll discover his quest soon enough - that is, if he lives. Like the previous Quest For Glory titles, the game is a combination of puzzle-solving adventure and role-playing. The player character can be a fighter, a thief, a magician, or a paladin. Importing a character from a preceding installment of the series is also possible. Once again the hero improves his skills by repeatedly using them (like throwing stones at a tree to improve the throwing ability, which might be needed to solve a puzzle). Combat system in this installment has undergone a major change. Battles are viewed from a side-scrolling perspective and are action-oriented. The protagonist is able to move freely, jump, and execute attacks and defensive moves, similarly to fighting games. The CD version of the game adds voice-overs to conversations as well as narrator's voice to text descriptions.

Quest for Glory is a series that blew my mind back in the day. I always loved adventure games, but I've never truly cared about Sierra games for some reason. The fact that you could die in King's Quest made me always favor the LucasArts games. I decided to take on Quest for Glory because I love RPGs and someone said it is one of the best RPGs out there. The first game was insane, it had the dialog trees and C&C that I love, so of course I fell in love with it and transferred my character across two other games in the series (QfG2 and QfG3). When it came to the fourth game, I was so burned out, that I just didn't play. For years I heard this was the best in the series. Well, I finally got to play it. The story didn't catch me as much as the first one, for most of the game I didn't really understand the plot, nor the motivation of my character besides going home. The combat is, how should I say, weird, taking inspiration from Street Fighter. But I don't know if it was the charming voice acting or the writing, by the end, I was hooked. Just like with the games that came before, Corey and Lori had another masterpiece. I wouldn't put it as the best in the series, I still think the first game is groundbreaking in many ways, but QfG4 is still very magic and a game I recommend to every adventure and RPG fan out there.

Really enjoyed this game, love the story, the atmosphere, the characters, voice acting, graphics, etc! Will continue to replay!
Only thing I don't like is the fighting system, because I'm terrible.

My favorite Quest for Glory game, and the first PC game I owned. Buggy, but unofficial patch should fix most problems

A supremely funny and charming game that's unfortunately held back by some obtuse adventure game elements. I still don't know of any other game where you can use your lockpick on your nose until you die.
