Radar Scope

released on Nov 01, 1980

Radar Scope is a 1980 fixed shooter arcade game developed by Nintendo R&D2 and published by Nintendo. The player assumes the role of the Sonic Spaceport starship and must wipe out formations of an enemy race known as the Gamma Raiders before they destroy the player's space station. Gameplay is similar to Space Invaders and Galaxian, but set in a forced perspective angle. Radar Scope was a commercial failure and created a financial crisis for the subsidiary Nintendo of America. Its president, Minoru Arakawa, pleaded for his father-in-law, Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, to send him a new game that could convert and salvage thousands of unsold Radar Scope machines. This prompted the creation of Donkey Kong. Radar Scope is one of the first video game projects for artist Shigeru Miyamoto and for composer Hirokazu Tanaka. Retrospectively, critics have praised Radar Scope for its gameplay and design being a unique iteration upon the Space Invaders template. One critic labeled it one of Nintendo's most important games because its commercial failure inadvertently led to the creation of Nintendo's mascot character and helped pave the way for the company's entry into the console video game market.

Ah Radar Scope, the game that tripped (in the states anyways) so that Donkey Kong could run the marathon. It's fine by itself, it just dropped at a bad time. A shame that's Radar Scope's place in video game history, but it getting remembered for something is an achievement in and of itself.

It's honestly nothing much, it's got a neat perspective that hides some very basic gameplay. Captain, your mission is to shoot down 48 UFOs. Good luck. You're shooting ships that shoot at you and as the levels go on more will come at you at once, they'll drop bombs, there's a little jumpy guy on the bottom that can come at you if you think you can safespot in the corner forever..my only real complaint is that their angled shots combined with the perspective can make both dodging and shooting a little tricky compared to the straightforward Space Invaders.

It's a shame Nintendo doesn't ever rerelease games like this and Sheriff, glimpses into Nintendo's gaming history before the Kong should be shown more often. Radar Scope is, at the very least, a little novelty.

Space Invaders at a tilt. The enemy lasers being the same color as the background grid makes them hard to spot sometimes.

basic Space Invaders-like that has some nice animations for the time but I can completely see why this failed commerically with how many Space Invaders clones there were and Pac-Man releasing the same year.

Would be cool if it got a rerelease along with Nintendo's other pre-Donkey Kong arcade games but overall its nothing special.
