Shining Force CD

released on Jul 22, 1994

This strategy RPG is a remastered compilation of two earlier Shining force titles: Shining Force Gaiden (originally released in Japan only) and Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, both for the Game Gear. The two stories put players in the role of Nick, a hero of royal blood who must rescue Queen Anri of Gardiana and reclaim the kingdom of Cypress from the evil empire of Iom's clutches.

Pasaron muchos años hasta que jugué los gaiden. La versión de Sega CD ayuda al tener mejoras técnicas. Me duele la falta de libertad entre batalla y batalla, pero aún así queda en el rincón shiningforcero de mi cora.

A remake collection of the two game gear shining force gaiden games, remastered for the sega CD. Everything you know and love about the cartridge games is here (with the exception of walkable towns, but eh oh well imo). Requiring a backup ram cart to play the last scenerios due to the save file being too big for the sega CDs internal memory is kind of stupid, though.

Shining Force CD makes significant improvements to the graphics as well as offering a higher quality CD audio soundtrack; also not only does it remake the first two Shining Force Gaiden for Game Gear but adds two completely new scenarios, that is, there are basically 4 SRPG games in one package, something I still love.

Very good. Not as good as I or II but really good.
A little easy at moments but book 3 fucked my ass real hard.

Randolf is a tyrant, too OP

Shining Force CD was part of my Sega CD repro pickup along with PopFul Mail and Snatcher. I was mostly sold on the cover, because I sure as hell have no real affinity for this kind of game nor have I played a Shining Force title before this one. Maybe this wasn't the best place to start, I don't know, but I mostly found it to be kind of dull. The story was pretty forgettable and combat was generally uninteresting. Also not a fan of how you need to back out of a mission if you want to get a little grinding done, just doesn't seem like there's a good system in place when you hit a level wall.

I also didn't quite finish this, actually. Similar to Policenauts, I ran into a weird emulation issue, though in this case it prevented me from starting the second scenario entirely. As far as I know, Kega Fusion's support for the Sega CD is pretty good, so I don't think it's the emulator's problem so much as the disc. I'm not considering this a fault on the game itself in any case, though I was so thoroughly bored with it, walking away at what is ostensibly the mid-way point was a fairly easy thing to do.

Kind of reminds me of Phantasy Star in that they're both beloved roleplaying series for Sega consoles that I find myself completely unable to get into, despite being a huge mark for RPGs. Oh well.

Maybe it was the lack of the exploration between battles, or maybe something less tangible, but this felt like a slightly less interesting version of Shining Force 1 and 2. Still very good, but not great.
