The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy

released on Feb 01, 1990

A fast moving platform game in which the player controls the Indiana Jones-esque and unfortunately named 'Edward Randy'. The levels are an inventive mix of standard platform action and 3-D scrolling levels; the latter usually having the player driving a jeep and repelling the enemy attacks. The game is based on the archetypal Hollywood action blockbuster and features a filmic score to back up the on-screen action. The player's only weapon is a whip - another nod to the Indiana Jones character - which can be used to both attack enemies and as a 'rope', to enable the player to reach distant platforms.

Short, unique, and crazy "acrobatic beat-'em-up" or "stunt platformer." You're always grappling, swinging, climbing, and leaping to safety while fending off scores of mooks. It's basically a nonstop gauntlet of set pieces (some feel a bit cheap). Definitely worth a play.

Feels like a more clunky and less polished version of a cinematic heavy set piece focused action game like the posterior Gunstar Heroes, but it's still very cool presentation-wise

You think the Gunstar Heroes comparison is forced? Then...

I can totally see what Treasure saw in this game, it's constantly upping the adrenaline with grand setpieces and bombastic presentation while you play as a cool Indiana Jones-like action hero, with a lives system that rewards not getting hit with more heath. The game probably would've benefitted from more buttons though, since the jump, roll, run, duck and airstomp actions are all mapped to one button + a direction, and there's a fair amount of cheap deaths later on, but even still it's a fun retro-action game romp with a friend on fightcade.

You need to play this game if you enjoy 2D crazy action shit. As a side note, it was released 32 years ago. GOD DAMN
