The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard

released on Jun 26, 2012

The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard is the first official add-on / DLC. Dawnguard revolves around an ancient prophecy predicted by an Elder Scroll. Foretelling the eternal obfuscation of the sun, the scroll gave instructions on how to perform a magic ritual with a mythic bow and a special blood sacrifice. A legion of vampires known as the Volkihar Clan, lead by Lord Harkon, seek to actuate the prophecy by performing the ritual; the Dawnguard, a faction of crossbow-wielding vampire hunters counters their aims. Skyrim's Dragonborn protagonist chooses whether to join the Dawnguard and prevent Nirn from being plunged in an irrevocable night, or assist the vampire coven with realizing their malevolent ambition. introduced in Dawnguard are two unique skill trees, one for vampirism noted as "Vampire Lord" and one for lycanthropy. Twenty-two quests featured in the plug-in; twelve exist in the main quest, with several optional side quests. A few repeatable, radiant quests can also be completed. The questline forks at "A New Order", where allegiance between the Volkihar Clan and the Dawnguard must be selected. The side chosen is irreversible. There are a ton of new items, people and weapons added with this DLC

Characters I care about and choices that change your experience of the game forever, incredible

Being a vampire is pretty cool and I like the story, but it doesn't offer as much as Dragonborn did.

I absolutely love the vampire setting but unfortunately "Dawnguard" doesn't bring anything new to the table except from some few things here and there.

The story is decent and the new characters are pretty cool but what surprised me the most is the boss fights, they are quite challenging and they look awesome.

There are also some interesting powers and magic spells which are very fun to use.

New armor sets and unique weapons that make the gameplay more diverse which I enjoyed.

Having said all that I think Dawnguard is a solid expansion, it offers some interesting things despite its short length and lack of side content.

Final Rating: "Great" ~ 8/10.

I loved the new locations and quests added further expanding the skyrim lore and theories around the dwarves and the falmer. The ability to become a vampire lord combined with all the new monsters and characters introduced had me glued to the screen.

It's a decent DLC, with some great new gear and locales. However, the story is where the work was needed. It never felt like there were real stakes (pun unintended) in Dawnguard. There's little tension to the story at times, though there are times when things do ramp up a bit. The ending is just very flat, with no real sense of accomplishment. Hakon, at times, just feels like another enemy to slay. Yeah, he has a few tricks, but honestly, he's just easy to beat, even in Survival mode. I just never believed I was in danger, even with my mishmash of a build. The new areas are incredibly interesting, however, and that's what really stands out to me. The Soul Cairn, in particular, is a neat little area to explore for the couple of hours you'll be there. Not really much to do, but there is a pretty decent side quest reward for those willing to hunt down some items. Fort Dawnguard is also an idyllic setting, with very little danger outside a couple of vampires that spawn in once. It has a neat castle, as well.

Again, great focus on vampires and new locations, but the story just never has some of the high stakes that the main plot does, which brings down the enjoyment some..
