My first time playing a game without any English localization whatsoever. The combat mechanics are a little polished up, and the voice acting and fancy graphics are nice. But by and large, it's pretty much the same game as Ys III was back in the day. Oath in Felghana is the much more comprehensive remake.
I played this game for a third time because cope harder, this version is just bizarre. It has completely revamped combat and boss design, a pointless town map and church area, voice acting and a lot more dialogue, a soundtrack that pales in comparison to many of the versions before it and sounds like it would fit better on the DS, and some interesting graphics.
On one hand most of the game feels a lot better designed overall (keyword: most), but it loses a lot of its charm with many environmental details and level elements from the original versions cut (they removed the volcano in Illburns and just made it into a regular ass sunny forest that's lame af). Oath in Felghana came out like 3 months after this so I'm not really sure what was going on here, I guess they wanted to give people a modern way to play the original but it's so far removed from the previous versions that it just exists as this weird entity.
