Mario 64 has an excuse for why Mario is so clunky to control. Sunshine does not. FLUDD takes away all of the zip and pop you get with most Mario games and replaces it with a slow and finicky toy. Delfino would be a cool hub world if it had any variation to it, but it’s just white stone everywhere. I’ve given Sunshine multiple chances and it’s never hit for me. A shame.

good 3D Super Mario adventure although it does have it's issues, gameplay feels really good with an great sense of movement, connecting Mario's moves along with the FLUDD feels satisfying and most of the game's levels allow the player to express themselves really well, it has really good visuals for an 2002 launch title with some really impressive graphical effects such as in the water bodies not to mention the banger soundtrack.

unfortunely the game has many issues notably some of the Shines being locked behind the Blue Coins which can be a bit clumbersome to get, an good number of frustating Shines in extremely clunky and unpolished levels such as the Pachinko Machine, Sand Bird, Corona Mountain or the Watermelon Festival not to mention the infamous platforming levels that Mario needs to traverse without the FLUDD, his move-set doens't have as many options like in 64 for example since they removed Long Jumps and that alone makes these levels nearly impossible to pass through without getting frustated by weird physics and lack of momentum.

overall Sunshine is good game bogged down by frustating levels and the game has an generally unpolished feel that you can't really see in most Super Mario games, it's still an good game and anyone who likes 3D platformers with an good sense of movement will most probably enjoy it.

Water spout friend adds half a star.

I fucking hate the camera. Everything else is goated

The water shooting in mario sunshine is the greatest gimmick mechanic in any game ever made. That it happens to be in the least polished 3D Mario might make Sunshine a more unassuming title to the less fully acquainted, the fact is that this game is an attempt to one up the greatest game ever made. It succeeded, mostly.
Future Mario titles attempt at similar, more subdued, and inferior movement gimmicks on top of superior, full Nintendo polish that have to more than make up for lacking Sunshine's water and ambition to compete.
Galaxy and Odyssey are more immaculate games that nevertheless shoot for slightly lower perfection that Mario 64 attained and Sunshine tried for.

The long jump being taken out is a step top far. Never do that again

Its highs can be very high, but when this game sucks, it fucking sucks.

Arguably one of the best Super Mario games to date. Amazing soundtrack with stunning visuals for it's time which hold up after so many years. The vibrant colors and different locale that Mario visits throughout the game make this one hard to forget. Not to mention the difficulty setting is pitch just perfect for any seasoned player to have a challenge.

This game is my abusive ex that I can't help but keep coming back to.

Never beat this one, has memorable music, vistas, AND voice acting.

This game is bizarre, compared to the other collectathon Marios, this one is especially unpolished, janky, buggy, and unfinished. It has a lot of issues, weird level design, poor missions, but even despite all of that its still a pretty great game. There really just aren't many games like it.

5 when you're schmoving, 2 when the game decides physics are merely a suggestion

I want to know the dude whose idea it was to take Mario and add a talking water jet pack and had the resolve and follow through to actual construct a fun game

Super Mario Sunshine is still a great game in the current year. Mario moves extremely smoothly, and FLUDD is a fun mechanic. The level design is extremely creative, but sometimes to its own detriment. Some shines are poorly hinted at, or have counter-intuitive mechanics, and sometimes the level gimmicks go too far. These shines come up at least twice per world, and can impede progress for a while. I found myself resorting to a guide a couple of times, but I was mostly able to figure it out. Other than that, this game is fantastic. Mario controls buttery smooth, the levels look pleasing and are very creative, and the music is catchy, yet tracks never overstay their welcome. It's a solid game, just be ready to deal with some older-game jank.

This game is weird. From its janky controls, at times its odd level design to its obscure and odd looking characters that have yet to return in another game. Despite all that the game is fun with great enviroments, good music and solid platforming. 6/10

It's not as bad as it's said to be, it's lovely, charming, full of heart and sunshine, it also has some of the most frustrating levels in a Mario game ever.

so fun i miss this game will probably buy that stupid mario thing nintendo put out for switch that includes this

As a follow up to Mario 64, it truly is an interesting and unique entry in the Mario franchise that has a unique vibe and feel that sits somewhere between the classic and modern interpretations of the franchise.

Despite my deep Love for the game, it has its flaws. Some shines are difficult and necessary at some point. There are some questionable level design choices. But for me this game still get booted up regularly which not every 3d mario game can say for itself. The beach vibes are so refreshing and marios movements are so unique but also somewhat thight. Flud complements marios movement in the game so good.

One of the perfect BANGERS that nintendo has produced, everything about this game is lovely, it's fun, engaging and so refreshing as a platformer. It has a lot of cool level design and gameplay ideas and overall it just has no flaws
