Cool concept, especially the asymmetrical co-op, but it's also needlessly and annoying difficult which really spoils the experience.

8 Eyes follows the same idea as Mega Man in that you can play the levels in any order but there is a correct order if you want to be successful in taking down the bosses. As I’m trying to sail through the NES catalogue I enabled infinite health cheats so I could easily progress through the story. This however did not help with the frustrating level design of Africa which is where I eventually threw in the towel.

Each level is somewhat similar, reminding me of Castlevania games. You can use Cutrus, your bird friend to collect items, hit switches or attack enemies but it is very frustrating to control.

Overall, not a terribly exciting game but I don’t know if I’m looking at it retrospectively or because it is actually a bad game. The reviews on Backloggd seem to say the latter.

Thinking Rabbit? More like STINKING Rabbit. This is just an overcomplicated Castlevania knockoff!

This just makes me grateful for Castlevania.

Mf has 8 eyes be looking like a Lovecraftian McDonald's toy.

It's a cross between Castlevania and Mega Man. Sounds awesome, and it should be, but somehow they fucked it up

Yeah its still a terrible castlevania knockoff with no actual identity of its own. Its annoying as there's the odd ok idea here, having a megaman style selection of areas is fun as is having a bird familiar to use for attacking and defense.

The problem is the game overly relies on this bird as actual attacks have next to no range and enemies have pretty much no hitstun either so you'll end up eating attacks most of the time... that is unless you use the bird on a regular basis or dodge enemies outright.

Unfortunately the controls as a whole are just too clumpy and heavy to actually make dodging a viable tactic so most of the time you'll just be giving enemies the bird until you have to replenish its meter. Its not fun and absolutely not worth the time or effort slogging through to make progress on.

Dolorosamente punitivo para ser jogado sozinho.
Altamente tedioso para permitir diversão.

seems like it might be cool with 2 players, so someone can control the bird. without that, your tiny rapier makes combat incredibly tedious, and combat is constant, making this a pretty grueling trial of patience. you're constantly assaulted by virtually unavoidable damage from flying enemies and projectiles, and you'll absolutely die before a level is finished if you aren't dealing with every single enemy by poking and retreating... again... and again... and again. it just feels kinda gross to play.

might like it a bit more if i ever have a chance to play it with someone, though i'd say that's... extremely unlikely. always thought this seemed like one of the interesting nes games i'd missed out on, but no - i would not recommend this one to anyone but serious nes completionists.

Mooom. I want Castlevania

We have Castlevania at home

Castlevania at home: 8 Eyes

Yeah. Its a ripoff and not a very good one at that thanks to the main character having the attack reach of a paperclip, controls that feel like you're battling through a glue mountain and enemies that feel far too agressive and spongey at all times leading to just nothing but fustration.
