I remember getting pretty far in this game at one point. My brother got it for me as a Christmas gift when we were both too young to be playing it. I had nightmares of the talking severed head at the beginning and my mom walked in to see me fighting lady ninjas with their tiddies out.

If your a fan of the show it's worth playing if not I'd still give it try but don't expect much other then a decent time killer. Soundtrack and voice acting are top notch though.

This is a 2.5 star game if not for the that gorgeous art and that killer music.

I was hoping this was gonna be like wet and turn out to be a flawed but fun game but I was wrong. I enjoyed the anime so I thought the game might be cool. It has some cool elements like cutting people but the game gets super repetitive and it was only around 7 hours. I don't think I'd recommend this but I always like playing games that have been generally forgotten.

Afro Samurai is just one of those comic/cartoons that you never really hear of until it’s a video game. Afro Samurai is about a ummm…samurai named…Afro…who is trying to find the #1 headband from the person who killed his father. Anyone who holds the #1 headband becomes a god and only the #2 bearer can challenge #1. While the story has interesting developments and great characters the game is mainly focused on combat. Afro and Ninja Ninja are voiced by Samual L. Jackson (you may have heard him as Officer Tenpenny in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas) along with Justice being voiced by Ron Perlman (Hellboy fame).

There are a lot of elements to the combat in AS, but the whole thing becomes very monotonous after a few levels. You have three basic attacks: Light, Heavy, and Kick (along with jump). You also have Focus attacks (which slow down time) and if you hold either heavy or light you with instantly slice in the enemy to bits. Not all enemies can easily succumb to the Focus so some will have to be weakened before using this. There is also a Parry technique in which you can “mount” an enemy and slice their head off. Parry is essential to most boss fights (more on those later) and to stay alive.

While the combat is very satisfying only because of the sheer amounts of gore that are spilled it does become very repetitive. There are combos you can learn but they aren’t really necessary since you can just button mash most of the time. I particularly loved the gore since it isn’t canned and any part you slice off WILL come off. If you slice just the toe that comes off, slice a piece of a guys’ skin it comes off. The whole theme is very mature with lots of cussing, sexual innuendos, and nude polecats. Yes, nude female samurais…nothing’s hotter than that. Anyways, there are some platforming sections, but this part of the game is somewhat flawed since Afro likes to stick to things a lot and the controls for this can be somewhat unresponsive. Controls for combat are spot on, but they seem to become sluggish and sticky when your platforming.

Another great aspect (that I’m glad more developers are doing) is there is no HUD. Just like games such as Dead Space, everything is on your main character to tell what’s going on. The more Afro glows red the closer you are to die when your focus is charged up Afro’s pendant sparkles…and that’s pretty much all you need. You do level up and learn new focus moves such as bullet slice (reflect and slice bullets in slow-mo), mounting etc. There are some different enemy types, but there could have been more. You’ll see a lot of the same ones half way through the game and it tends to add to the monotony.

Enemy AI is actually pretty good and you will have a challenge fighting off enemies by the dozens. Thankfully Afro is fully equipped to take on all these baddies. Combat doesn’t tend to get too frustrating until you get to bosses since the windows for attacking are so small it takes so much patience to kill them. While your character does level up it doesn’t really make a difference since it’s all set on auto really. The game is fairly short clocking in at about 4-6 hours depending on how you play the game and your skill level. There is zero replay value since there are no extra modes you unlock or anything. I just highly recommend Afro Samurai as a fun weekend rental.

It had an achievement for cutting off toes

Better than what'd you think. Can literally chop enemies to bits.

This is not an amazing game hell I'd go so far as to say it's not even that good, but god damn do I have a soft spot for it jankiness and all.

This game felt like a launch title for the 360, but it isn't!!!! I wanna keep going with it but it's suuuuuper repetitive. Funnily enough they chose to keep this game completely HUD free also, so essential gameplay mechanics are communicated in terrible subtle ways lol

Being a fan of Afro Samurai I really wanted to give this game a chance, but it unfortunatley falls flat pretty quick. Before I dig into the gameplay let's go over what it nails, which is the visual presentation and soundtrack. The game still looks great 10+ years later thanks to it's styilized aesthetic, and the soundtrack sets the vibe & tone very well. With that being said however, it's not enough to cover up how barebones the gameplay is. While there isn't anything broken or egregious, there isn't any depth or progression to keep you interested. Plus being locked at 30fps for an action game is a sin.

I mean, I'll give this game credit where it's due: It has a great art direction and it actually sorta did the whole zandatsu thing before Metal Gear Rising... Yeah, that's about it.

This game goes so hard damn shoutouts to my friend Joey who introduced this game to me and then in turn the whole series, both the series are even better

Damn, What A Game. Janky Controlls, But How It Looks Is Very Good. Time To Watch The Series Now.

I never even watched the source material but I recall loving the shit out of this game.

I dare not replay it because it most likely doesn't hold up though (at least in gameplay)

Everything is great but the visuals give me an uncanny valley feeling, and the combat can feel floaty at times
story and music in particular are chef's kiss
