Played on switch.
I loved this game!!! Just a little story with some spooky vibes. Loved the overall narrative. Really touching, honestly.

Walking simulator with a story full of shit, really not interesting

Legit just a walking simulator with an uninspired boring story

I think there is a lot of over-hate for this game. Yes, you can beat this game in under 5 minutes, yes, you just go around the house moving things, that's just kinda the point. The game is using this house as a means to tell a mystery of what happened before you got there, and more importantly what happened to your sister. It's actually really interesting seeing all the ways they lock certain areas throughout the house, and actually going through the house and exploring is really neat and fun because of all the hidden passages and such. This game really does lean to heavily on "game logic" that there would be just so many objects to find to sus things out, but largely it's easily ignored when you start to get engrossed in the story. Not everything in this game's story goes somewhere, but there are plenty of plot threads that led to learning more about this family and their dynamic with each other.
Would I hail Gone Home as one of the best narratives out there? Nah, but for what it is, Gone Home is just a really neat tale about a dysfunctional family going through life, and honestly it serves it's purpose well.

I remember this game getting a lot of criticism, back before I played it, for being a 'walking simulator'. This struck me as a little odd, especially so after I played it. Firstly, you don't normally criticize a game for its type or genre. Like, who has a go at mario for being a jumping simulator? I don't know. Secondly, this is less a walking simulator, and more an archaeological simulator, because you dig through a virtual space to uncover (extremely recent) history. That's fascinating, to me.

It's a short game, but the experience is rich and hugely enjoyable. Also, how did they make it feel so spooky? I always felt like I was about to get jumped! That's wild. Also, have you ever sat and listened to the soundtrack, top to bottom? What a mood.

Nice to get a strong LGBTQ+ story in a game. We're getting more of them as time goes on, but it's still slow going. From what I remember, this was a really big one for proving the potential popularity of games with gay themes.

Really touching game.

This game was not what I expected and I'm so glad it wasn't.

Considering the widespread critical acclaim this game has received, I genuinely had higher expectations. While there are a few intriguing sections and the overall atmosphere is mostly immersive, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. The game initially hints at a promising and eerie horror-like characterisation, but the atmosphere gradually dissipates when the core theme reveals itself to be a rather ordinary coming-of-age romance.

Gone home is worthless.

It is one of the most uninvolving and uneventful walking sims ever and has next to nothing to offer but a somewhat dense atmosphere.
And even said atmosphere suffered because of the games age, since much of that atmosphere comes from the fact that the house the game takes place in was well designed for its time. It had a homey feel to it and felt crammed and cozy enough that one might think people could live there.

However this holds absolutely no candle against the more recent video game homes, seen for example in Uncharted 4.

And while the story, its premise and solution is unique, at least for video games, unique doesn't mean interesting and it certainly doesn't mean good.

Aaaaaand the resolution of the story has to be one of the most unsatisfying, throwaway, lazy and cheap resolutions to any story ever. Something that was surely done exclusively for the purpose of subverting expectations.

Please stay away from this pretentious hipster garbage.
