Ubisoft may be a steaming pile of horse shit, but always remember, they made Rayman.
Grow Home is a cute, short little game about a wonky robot traversing upwards to bring a seed to their ship. That’s, uh, that’s really all it is. It takes about an hour - an hour and a half to beat.
Sometimes B.U.D (the robot) can feel a little iffy with the grabbing, especially trying to do it upside down to get on top of a mushroom or flower. I fell pretty far down a few times towards the end of the game, because my leaf straight up just kept disappearing. Mrs. Syrem walked in and saw it happen, so I got da receipts.
If you just want a quick semi-relaxing game that’s bordering between fun and a challenge, I’d say give Grow Home a go. Or should I say, give it a grow HHEEHEHEEEHOHOHOHOHHOHEHOHOHHEHEHEH
6/10.

I liked the climbing controls, in how your left and right triggers reflect your left/right hand grip in game. Your little robot character can barely stand up but there's a slim sweet spot where movements really flows. Collectathon crystals are a bit superfluous, but on the other hand the ecology scanning is kinda nice. I liked the ambience-focused soundscape, it's very calming.
A delightful little time, though obviously underdeveloped in some key areas. Mainly, I'd say the visual style didn't really come together, and I do wish that the story was a bit longer. It's impressive due to how much scale and intrigue it achieves with so few elements present, but it didn't blow me away. But I guess that's what the sequel is for, eh?
Grow Home is such a charming little game! You play as this cute robot dude, climbing this giant beanstalk-looking plant into space. The controls feel a bit weird at first, but once you get the hang of them, it's honestly pretty fun and oddly satisfying. It's really short, and the world's a little empty... but for a chill, super unique experience, it's definitely worth checking out!
Love games that give a strong sense of verticality. Grow Home is enjoyable and relaxing, and overall is a fairly one of a kind experience. No shoehorned combat or quantity over quality game design made to waste your time. Just a strong core concept and free exploration. Not exceptionally memorable or surprising, but I don't really have anything bad to say about it.
Sights & Sounds
- Kinda looks like a PS3 game but with better draw distance. Luckily, the nicely styled visuals are still charming and nice to look at. The last large island you reach before going up to the end is especially pretty
- Not sure how to feel about the "procedural animation", maybe it was a notable technique in 2015. In any case, BUD does kinda look funny when he climbs around. I think that's the point, but it can look pretty awkward at times
- There's nothing especially notable about the sound design
Story & Vibes
- There's not much of a narrative. Just grow your plant and climb it
- Given the open-ended gameplay and lack of stakes, playing the game is a easy-going, light-hearted experience
Playability & Replayability
- While I wouldn't necessarily call this a "frustration game", it does come close. As you grow your plant and climb it, you'll often be risking long drops that'll require an annoying amount of retracing your steps
- Climbing isn't fast, either. You kinda just flop up any given vertical surface before awkwardly rolling on top of it
- That said, the game would be fairly boring if it weren't for the climbing mechanic requiring some modicum of your attention
- Beyond the growing and climbing, there's little side objectives, collectables, and achievements to attend to if you want
Overall Impressions & Performance
- It's not that I actively disliked the game. I just found it a little tedious in spite of the short duration. Sure, there's plenty of charm, but Grow Home just wasn't all that engaging or fun to play
- While I was happy to be able to play through the game on the Steam Deck, I did suffer one highly annoying crash. I was in sight of a checkpoint after a long climb when the game froze and stopped. Repeating 20 minutes of gameplay that wasn't all that exciting in the first place felt like a chore
Final Verdict
- 4.5/10. Very soft recommend against. If you want to play a cute, cheap game that won't take you very long to beat, you may get something out of the experience; however, if you're just casually interested, there's hundreds of other short 3D platformers that are more fun to play
