All these years later it is hard to separate this game from the trilogy as a whole, but in hindsight, the first Mass Effect is a really interesting sci-fi adventure that set the stage for greatness.
Part of the problem stems from the fact that this title did not come to Playstation until well after I had already fallen in love with the sequel. And while it might measure up to it's successors in narrative and concepts, the mechanics of functioning in this universe had taken a huge leap between games.

Hey this one's just ok, there are real mechanical issues that the remaster doesn't fix, but at the end of the day, this game spawned one of the single most interesting space opera narratives ever written. You should probably play this one before you dive into the other two, but it's far more vegetables than dessert in that metaphor.
A classic from Bioware and one of their best RPGs. The story is the best in the series and this game also does everything right in terms of gameplay. Great soundtrack, great party interaction and some really difficult decisions. The exploration of foreign planets with the Mako was a bit lame but also quite funny :D
i started my journey with this series because of my love of KOTOR and man does this start have so many shades of the first KOTOR.
as a start to a trilogy this does it's job, there is a good sense that this is the beginning of something greater just from the first moment. there's things i didn't like but once the games on you get use to it and they become fun!
i think what hooked me was the characters and wanting to see where their arcs ended up, including shepard!

I feel like age has done this game a disservice because being able to play this back to back with ME2 shows how scuffed the game part of this game really is. The world and universe shines the most in this title and I feel like that is mostly because everything else in the game is kind of a slog. That being said the universe of Mass Effect is incredibly interesting and the Hanar are one of the most truly alien feeling species I can think of in a video game.

first time i played this i had to quit bc the mako gameplay made me dizzy, came back for the remaster and enjoyed the story and the mako fixes! i will never forget the first time hearing sovereign's voice - THAT is how you introduce a villain and set the tone for the true horror of what's to come in the trilogy.
