A weaker version of Mega Man X. The extra campaign where you can play as Vile is pretty cool, though. The unlockable 30 minute anime is a great extra. Watching the anime really gives me the feeling that they were banking on this being the way they reboot and revive Mega Man X into something more... serious? Maybe? I admire the attempt.

You can't dash jump by pressing dash and jump at the same time, you have to dash then jump. That makes the same way worse to control compared to the other X games.

Story aditions are really good.
But otherwise this is quite literally the same as X1.
To be fair there's barely anything to change to improve it, so kinda wild this exists.
Still, its X1, you can't go wrong with it, and I tend to alternate between it and the OG when replaying it.

I played this for the first time, and honestly, it just feels like a mostly worse version of the game. With the exception of the final boss, and the Z-Buster.

It's just a very cramped experience, with slightly more clunky controls.

Nota: 9

Great remake, gave a lot of personality and charm, especially with a professional and cool english dub this time.

Mega Man X is a fantastic game. One with issues of course, but that doesn’t detract from its greatness and its legacy as one of the greatest titles in the Super Nintendo library. With that reputation in mind, how does its PSP remake hold up? Well, I’ll start off with what I view as the positives of the title.

The art style of Maverick Hunter is fantastic. As a 2.5D remake of a SNES title, the developers did an amazing job of translating those sprites into 3D models. Unlike so many other remakes, this game still ‘feels’ like its source material. That 2.5D style has always been something that I find to be quite charming, and seeing it executed in Maverick Hunter as well as it has been is delightful.

Gameplay wise, there are mostly nothing but positives. I do really appreciate how, for the most part, Maverick Hunter plays exactly the same. One new appreciated addition was the inclusion of button mapping, allowing for more unique controls than what was offered in the original title. I myself found issue with how dashing worked in the original, and strongly appreciated being able to map the controls to function similarly to how dashing worked in the Mega Man Zero titles instead.

If you’re a veteran of the original title, there’s still a lot of new content to be discovered here as well. The armor upgrades have been swapped around for example, affecting how one may tackle the boss order. The bosses themselves have new attacks, making them a significant challenge if you are used to defeating them in one way or another. A mode to play as Vile has also been added, though I can’t say too much on that as I have only currently beaten the game with X.

There’s a lot of charm in how Maverick Hunter presents itself. New animated cutscenes have been added, and voice acting is now present in the game where it wasn’t before.

Now for the negatives.

Being a PSP remake, a lot of things had to suffer in order to get it to properly function. In some ways, the presentation of the title is worse than the original. For example, the screen is a tad zoomed in, causing one to take damage in areas they didn’t necessarily mean to, or die in ways that they likely wouldn’t have done so in the original.

Some of the cool moments in the original opening mission are gone, or altered in a way that is inferior to how the original title presented them. For example, the Vile fight in that mission now has a health bar, where in the original title he did not. This may not seem like a major difference, but in a lot of aspects this diminishes the wordless story telling that moment had. Where as X was fighting an enemy who seemed so impossibly strong only to lose the battle, it is now obvious how much health Vile has. This served to showcase X’s development in the original, and served to further showcase just how stronger he was by the end of the title, where Vile’s last boss fight has a health bar. That signified that Vile was no longer the hopelessly powerful titan he was at the start, but just another enemy who could be defeated, all because of the growth X went throughout the game. That subtle bit of storytelling is no present in Maverick Hunter.

The voice acting is…okay, to say the least. I don’t hate it, and it’s not as bad as other X titles in the series, but I can’t say it’s amazing or anything. It does get annoying to have X constantly scream an attack name when fighting a boss though.

The music is just not as good as the original title. It feels a bit too light in comparison, and basically has no punch or power on its own. Mega Man X’s original soundtrack felt energetic and powerful, and these new compositions just don’t convey that same feeling, leaving certain stages (such as storm eagle) to feel deeply underwhelming.

Overall though, I’d say this isn’t a terrible version of Mega Man X. While I’d still recommend the original title over this, there is definitely a lot of fun to be had here, and there is value to be found here. I’d say that in terms of the PSP’s library, this is a very solid game.

On the first times i played this, i liked more than the original X. There's some nice differences like you're being able to select a weapon and still be able to use the buster, like on the PS1 games, giving a lot of utility for armored armadillo charged weapon, i also really like how the dash part is on the flame mammoth stage, because this way i can pass through there while there's lava. Unfortunately i don't like some of these differences , like you're only being able to get the spark mandril's stage heart tank if you already have boomerang kuwanger weapon, so i have mixed feelings about these changes. Unfortunately they missed the chance to already start the game with dash and then have an air dash to find, or even something completely new, and the helmet is still useless for anything besides some specific upgrades. But they also changed the design of sigma stages, and i appreciate that a lot, gives you a new way to play through them.

As for what really makes me have the original X as my favorite, it's because the game became really really easy here, every boss is a pushover, and they messed up the dash button. I also like the original graphics better but i still like the changed style, but i really don't think the OST is as good here, i really like some remixes like storm eagle and sigma stage 1, but most of the originals are so much better.

I still like this a lot, they also expanded the original story, Vile mode is really good(i just don't know why the hell his theme song is played in every stage), it's a good way to replay the original game, but most of the time i prefer to just replay the original and that's it

Estragaram a trilha sonora, pecado imperdoável!!!!

The added voice acting and animated cutscenes are really cool, as is the Day of Sigma OVA. This was the same era that Capcom made not one, but TWO Street Fighter OVAs to promote the release of IV. This and those make me wish Capcom would do something like that again.

I like the graphical visual style of the game and changes to the UI. There's a little bar in the top left that shows you the order of your weapons you've collected so you can swap weapons faster knowing exactly how many button presses you need with the shoulder buttons until you fast swap to the weapon you want.

A negative aspect of the visuals are that, unless I configured something wrong, I don't like that the entire screen is shifted up for some reason? I know it's a PSP game so it's a smaller device, but the screen is SUPER zoomed in to the point where things I could see on the ceiling in the original game are impossible to see now. The crushers in Burnin' Noumander's stage are harder to see, as are the Batton Bone's in the ceilings of stages like Icy Penguigo. This leads to decreased visual clarity in being able to see what's coming ahead or above you. Surely the game could've made the characters smaller so more of the playable screen could be seen?

The Armor Part upgrades are all rearranged for some reason, as well. I've heard that some people like to do No Upgrade runs, and it's impossible to skip the Leg Parts in the SNES version. So I think it's a good change to have placed them in a way that you can skip them if you'd like, but now the Leg Parts are where the Arm Parts were in the original and you don't need the Head Parts for them. The Body Parts in the SNES version you get from fighting the Sting Chameleao secret miniboss is now the Arm Parts. The Body Parts are where the Head Parts in the original were. And there's a completely new area in Icy Penguigo's stage for the Head Parts.

The cool thing about the placement of the X-Buster upgrade in the original was that it was pretty difficult to get. It required both the Leg Parts and the Head Parts on a pixel-perfect dash and then you had to break through the blocks vertically and keep wall jumping to find the upgrade before you fight Vava. Now it's placed in an area against a boss that's been made significantly easier to fight than the original, so you very easily gain access to an upgrade that makes your weapon considerably stronger. Not only that, but the Leg Upgrades, which I believe are vital to making the game feel satisfying to play for beginners, are a little TOO out of the way now. Surely, they could have just raised the ceiling on the Icy Penguigo level so people could jump over it if they wanted to, right? It didn't necessitate moving ALL the upgrades around in a way that kinda makes the progression worse.

Not that it would really matter anyway, because you can quit out of a level and keep your upgrades at any time, allowing you to have a fully upgraded X before you even fight a single boss. There's a reason the original game had it so you couldn't use your Escape Unit before you completed a stage in full, and it was to prevent this exact scenario. You can argue that "balance" in a single player game is kind of pointless, why NOT have it so you can be busted and overpowered as much as you want. But it removes a lot of the challenge and difficulty curve the designers of the original game intended. It's still a cool alternate way to play X1 with lots of additions and cool features that make this version worth playing, but it's not a replacement for the original whatsoever.

The fact that we never got MHX2 - 6 proves that we live in the worst timeline.

I can't take it seriously when x says "answer me, storm eagle!" Because the fucking delivery of the line sounds like a mom who's pissed off you didn't clean your room

there is no reason for this game to exist. just play Mega Man X.

The original is still the best and has a better artstyle but this was fun

great remaster/remake whatever you call

This remake is so cool. I can't wait for the rest of the series to get a similar treatment to this 🥲
