Played this for the first time since I was six only to find that it's still hard as hell because of the wonky controls. Trippy as hell, and the sound-effects seem to be burned into my memory from a previous life.
The level creator is Mario Maker before Mario Maker existed. BTW, does anyone remember this coming in a bundle with a golf game?

Multiple sources on the internet say that Serj Tankian from System of a Down conceptualized this game but I think it might just be one of those lies people repeat
Older shareware games like this, as a child, had a much trippier vibe than I was used to from the relative comforts of Nintendo and Sony
They would make me feel a little strange, a little uncomfortable, a little alone
Speedy Eggbert is all of those things, there is a frightening emptiness to it, but calm, and incidential
As in, it just turned out like that, they were just trying to make A Game, thinking it's weird is on me
Feels like the kind of game that aliens from another solar system would make if they played and were subsequently inspired by Super Mario Bros as a result of an intergalactic cultural exchange

It actually isn't THAT bad! Everything is just fine across the board for this game, so it's a bit lackluster but it DOES have 4 player multiplayer and an entire level editor. I spent hours in this game as a kid making levels. Having this in 1998 is no joke, it really was sort of a Mario Maker-esque like feeling.
this was the first game i ever played in my entire life.
i was like, 5 or 6 when i played it and i could barely remember everything about it except for it's name and the fact i still have it on a cd in my cupboard.
the game is definitely an artifact from it's time, the controls are incredibly strange and platforming in itself becomes a puzzle with set distances for all 3 jump types (short, normal, high). the graphics are charmingly old and i'll most likely play it again for nostalgia reasons.
Eggbert's noises are so memorable that i can still imagine them perfectly in my head, every noise he makes when he touches a hazard and the noise he makes when he hits his head.
definitely give it a try if you like old, weird, and clunky games.
