Reviews from

in the past

This negative review is not because of the alleged physics problems some users are having, of which the solution to that is just to turn on V-Sync. It's an old game, live with it.

What I'm negative about is that after 11 years I decided to buy this game again and go at it for a nostalgia trip. It's part of one of my favorite storylines of Tomb Raider. Went through all of it only to be again kinda weirded out by the ending.
Compared to 11 years ago, today I decided to finally do some research about the ending, and what do I learn?

THERE ARE TWO MICROSOFT XBOX 360 EXCLUSIVE DLCs THAT HAVE THE TRUE ENDING IN IT.

Tomb Raider Underworld: Beneath the Ashes[www.microsoft.com] and
Tomb Raider: Underworld: Lara’s Shadow[www.microsoft.com]
And I thought that Prince of Persia 2008 was one of the only games with these kinda practices.

I'm saddened to learn this game has this history behind it, especially cause it's never mentioned in the game that the story doesn't end there, so it just leaves the player with a meh ending.
The game has a "Previously on Tomb Raider" video, why not make one with the ending of the DLCs I wonder? How is it better, that to know it, I have to look it up on YouTube?
Even a simple sentence stating the story would continue on XBOX 360 DLCs would have been better than nothing.
Disappointing, as much as with Prince of Persia 2008.

Nope.
Nope nope nope nope nope.
Don't get this content lacking trash PC port game. Don't support this.
It's crazy that THE ENDING is an exclusive DLC never released on PC.

05/05/2021 edit:
As of today, I learned apparently the devs are trying to port the DLCs to the other platforms!
There is some hope!

Does a good job of bringing together the Legend and Anniversary storylines, but the gameplay feels clunkier and less polished.

The first Tomb Raider game I liked and played all the way through.

O maior boss desse jogo foi a câmera.

My first real interaction with the Tomb Raider franchise, enjoyed it. The underwater sections were actually decent, and environments were beautiful.

oyun oynanmıyor gördüğüm en kötü port

Great story, and beautiful scenarios, but never made me want to repeat it that often as most of the Tomb Raider games did to me. It is undoubtedly magnificent, I'll give it that. It is the last of Crystal Dynamics' first Tomb Raider trilogy when it still had the essence of the classic Lara Croft. I just wish that the Xbox 360 DLCs came to Steam too...

Beaucoup aimé cette trilogie, comment elle réexploite la mythologie du premier volet pour créer une histoire familiale touchante.

Yeah, this one's the weakest - it's a whole lot jankier than the others and seems absent of many qualities which made the previous games so memorable (no QTE sequences with brutal death scenes, no boss fights, no dedicated driving sections, no time trials, no affable side characters keeping you company throughout the journey, etc.) Instead we get a lacking story due to DLC progression-locking EXCLUSIVE to Xbox, so if you're on any other console you're inherently getting an unfinished story (mainly consisting of Laura by herself just going over exposition) and there's nothing you can do about it. That all having been said, this still retains the great puzzle-platforming and relaxing atmosphere which makes the series so lovable. You get to chillax in so many beautiful locations, just you and your brain against the environment - you're given more than enough time to look at it from all angles, and as always it's so satisfying when you can finally best it. The sea levels are really impressive, music is elite as always too. Frame rate on PS3 is often unconscionably choppy and the AI is dumb as literal shit, but if that's a trade-off for these sumptuous graphics which sometimes - and I'm not exaggerating - make this look almost like a PS5 game, then imo that's decently fair. Plus you get to unleash hell on enemies with Thor's hammer by the end so, like, come on that's pretty dope. What ISN'T fair, however, is how little screen time goth baddie Amanda has in this despite being a main villain. Like what the hell, Eidos??

In terms of story the continuation is not good at all. I liked Legend's story quite a lot, but can't say that for this one. It's a good Tomb Raider game. Good exploration, tombs and puzzles but the combat and story were a let down.

my queen rolls around in dirt for weeks but the legs are never not lathered waxed and moisturized

jaw drops to floor, eyes pop out of sockets accompanied by trumpets, heart beats out of chest, awooga awooga sound effect, pulls chain on train whistle that has appeared next to head as steam blows out, slams fists on table, rattling any plates, bowls or silverware, whistles loudly, fireworks shoot from top of head, pants loudly as tongue hangs out of mouth, wipes comically large bead of sweat from forehead, clears throat, straightens tie, combs hair Ahem, you look very lovely.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is a bit of a rollercoaster. The environments are amazing, the puzzles are clever, and Lara's movement feels way smoother than past games. However, the story is kinda forgettable, the combat is clunky, and let's not even talk about the underwater sections! Still, if you miss the classic Tomb Raider focus on exploration and acrobatic platforming, Underworld delivers moments of brilliance despite its flaws.

I can feel how rushed this game was

Incredible level design. Here, they take it to a whole new level of emmerisiveness. The game also serves as the dramatic climax to the story started with Anniversary and continued in Legend. It does not disappoint!

I do remember beating this game, I never got all the rewards in the end and I've made a promise to myself that I'll never replay it again.

Only thing I liked about Underworld was the soundtrack.

played this on the Nintendo DS and I'm intrigued that the DS version might've been one of the better iterations? For some reason my mum really loved this game and we helped each other out through some of the difficult puzzle sections. Fond memories

Atrocious camera, poorly designed combat and just a generally lacklustre story aside, this is easily my favourite of the Legend Trilogy (which is probably a hot take). Gameplay-wise, it’s exactly what I wanted from a Tomb Raider game.

I think what puts it above the other two for me is not only the much improved graphics, but the exploration and level design. The puzzles were genuinely fun to solve, the environments take full advantage of Lara’s much improved and expanded abilities such as rock climbing and pole swinging. Zip and Alister aren’t providing unnecessary commentary in Lara’s ear the whole game and you get to absolutely lay waste to enemies with Thor’s hammer Mjolnir towards the end. Brilliant!

Whilst it wasn’t a deal breaker, it’s such a shame that you constantly find yourself at odds with the game’s camera. The combat is such a massive step down from the previous two games. Thankfully, combat encounters are few and far between and whilst it’s nice to get some closure on the story of the trilogy, it’s still pretty bare bones, but that’s to be expected from a video game. In all honesty, I don’t play Tomb Raider games for the story (who does?) and in general its gaping flaws didn’t prevent me from having a blast.

Compared to its narrative and technical predecessor, Legend, I'd say that Underworld possesses higher highs, but far lower lows. The lock-on combat fares even worse in this game, with the improbably-good aim and near-impenetrability of the enemies turning shoot-outs into battles of attrition. The story is some real grade-A cheese, but is paced well enough, and serves as solid bedrock for the stars of the game: The, well, tomb raiding. All expertly-staged levels that were a joy to explore.

I am torn with Underworld.

On the one hand, it has some very interesting level design, very nice presentation and a good balance of exploration vs combat. In a lot of ways, It feels much closer to older Tomb Raider games than it does to Legend.

However, there is something distinctly "off" about this game, especially on PC. The movement animations look sped up and feel wrong. There's something very weird about how Lara moves.

Furthermore, the game physics are completely broken on PC and require VSync to be turned on just to be somewhat workable.

The story is mostly OK, but at some point you do sit back and think "Is this really what Tomb Raider has become?".

Overall, I would recommend seeing this one through if only to complete the LAU trilogy. I will say, however, that I will not likely be playing it again.
