Pretty fun game for the last good YGO era. It sucks how you need to be on other dorms to get the story going and how losing on a single exam, even if you did perfectly on every other one boots you back to the beginning, losing access to duelists you had already beaten over and over.
I wish it actually let you date Alexis.

For a GBA and Yu-Gi-Oh game in general, this is filled with a lot of content.
You can rise through the ranks or more more appropriately put "dorms". While there isn't a specific grand story, which is a shame, there are various events. The rotating banlist adds some variety and makes you rethink your strategies and deck. There is also a good pool of opponents with a variety of decks to play against. The roaming aspect is pretty basic, but adds an extra layer of depth to the game.
Like most games in this series though, you'll have to grind quite a bit for the decks you may want. Soundtrack is meh, deck edit can be annoying to navigate, especially as your card collection grows, and while the card pool is quite large for its time (around 1200 cards) Konami decided to not implement a fair amount of cards.

There's a lot in this game. There's a story mode, exploration, ranking up in the duel academy, cards to collect, puzzles, etc. Moreso than any of the other TCG games I've played (pokemon, yugioh, etc) this folds in the RPG elements seamlessly into the loop of playing card games, going back and getting new gear, playing more games, etc. I guess this is the same thing as Spirit Caller but I haven't played that one. I probably will
To me this game is either a fun way to mess around with different types of decks just to see what happens, or a race to get The Optimal Deck (which is essentially just a cyber dragon deck) and then just steamroll the rest of the game. There's a couple other ways of doing this but essentially you win by blitzing the opponent. Idk I find that kind of thing fun, the challenge is kind of to get to that point as soon as possible and then go no thoughts head empty after that for me.
Also Yugioh GX is my favorite Yugioh and past this point I don't have any fucking understanding of how the game is supposed to work, I'll probably never play a Yugioh game made after this because I don't want to learn the new mechanics which is pretty sad, but I'm sorry between all the Pokemon and Yugioh cards I still somehow remember after 20 years I simply do not have space in my brain for any more stuff. This goes for new gen Pokemon too actually. And any new people I meet

Dropped this game because Spirit Caller was just so much better, and I started playing that around the same time. This game is unfortunately way too slow, and your opponents are ridiculously strong in the beginning in my opinion. While that was initially fun, I found that the system of reserving battles was pretty boring unfortunately, and I don't think Yugioh got that good as a game until archetypes really became a thing, and that was not here. I did enjoy building a deck and finding the optimal strategy for winning, but in the long run it is simply outclassed by later games it seems.
