Good game, gripping story, wish it were slightly less annoying to get the true ending/map everything out.

Im a big fan of novel games like these and this game was a pretty good one. The characters were all pretty good and there were some really good plot twists. Not much to say but a solid 7/10 game.

Reviewing every game i've fully completed #6

would've been cooler on the DS frfr

Good game, some things doesnt make sense but its ok.

Holy shit this game is so good its shame it never got two sequels!

wonderfully washed that danganropa taste out of my mouth

I wish I had the mental wherewithal to play this on the DS because I know the experience would be even better but I think if I didn't have my flowchart I would be very very sad.

I've become convinced that there is no way to substantially improve this game, and/or its story, without drastically altering the final product and its core identity for the worse. If Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa series is an exploration of character relationships dynamics at its most hyperbolic and brash, Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors explores those same dynamics with the tact of a carefully crafted pressurized chamber. There are so many moments within each stroke and line that are created with the sole intent of increasing the dread between two characters, whether by sowing discord or pulling them together amidst almost certain death. The tension isn't overbearing at first but it builds and towers into this monolith of anxiety, to the point where its true finale brought me to tears on my first playthrough.

That's not to discount the gameplay, which is in effect perfected (for the most part) in the PC port but is just as gripping and fun in the original DS version. It's the type of escape room puzzling that I absolutely adore, fully realized and made even more gripping with the eclectic ways you craft solutions. Combining objects, altered arithmetic, careful dialogue traversal, it's all so wild and fresh as someone who plays around with this genre as a matter of habit, let alone taste—it makes me wonder just how much more developed this idea of room traversal and additive puzzle-solving can get if this game is the best I've seen the genre offer. It's such a shot of euphoria peeking through each individual notch in this labyrinth of rooms, putting together pieces and creating more puzzles. It's this type of design that makes me swoon and weep for more of its kind, even as the escape room genre wanes in its popularity little by little every year. This is the type of puzzle game I fucking adore, concentrated and purified to such an extent that replaying it was an immediate rush of dopamine and anxiety.

My first visual novel :) I really loved unraveling this mystery bit by bit. I really liked the puzzle rooms and always wanted to know how the story would continue. The game had a very cool setup, an exciting basic mystery and managed to keep me interested for the entire length of the game. I thought the amount of "anime bullshit" was just right. Sure, you have to accept some things as given, even if certain plot points don't make a lot of sense and the story gets very wild towards the end, but overall I found it much more believable than the later parts. Still a great little insider tip for me.

my countless hours of playing sudoku finally paid off

The story really hooked me, and the intricate sci-fi mystery thriller plot made the game engrossing enough to overlook some of the more frustrating gameplay mechanics.

The escape room gameplay is a great complement to the visual novel segments. Even though there's a huge amount of dialogue and narration in the game, it rarely feels like a slog to read through.

Where the game does become a slog is in finding all of its alternate endings. After obtaining one of the common "bad" endings, you are sent back to the beginning with painfully scant guidance as to how to proceed. While you might enjoy exploring new scenarios on your 2nd (or maybe 3rd) route, eventually you'll get tired of holding down the right D-pad for 2 hours only to be rewarded with the same unsatisfying non-sequitur endings. There's also no guidance on which of the many decisions available to you will impact the ending. Most of them don't.

Strangely, the game does include two handy "preview" videos that give clues on how to unlock the full story, but these videos only become available after they would have been most useful. The solution here, as many have pointed out, would have been a flowchart mechanic, which would allow you to skip between completed scenarios in order to find new paths (I see they implemented this feature in the remake).

While the localisation and writing was generally top-notch, there were a couple of things that bugged me.

The first was the characters' truly excessive swearing (I blame the localisers!). It is hilarious to see these characters swearing at each other CONSTANTLY, even when it doesn't fit the tone ("You Old Bitch! Fuck!!"). I laughed out loud when, during a dramatic, major story moment, our protagonist blurted out "What the shit!". Truly an iconic line that will be remembered for generations. While it's sometimes clunky, I do appreciate the writers trying to go for a more "adult" tone to match the subject matter. This game probably goes toe-to-toe with Chinatown Wars for edgiest game on Nintendo DS (Anyone wanna deal some heroin?).

Less endearing is the way the characters' sexist or objectifying harassment of women is played for laughs. Back in 2009, dialogue about looking up a female characters' skirt as she walks up the stairs, or asking female characters to repeatedly say "it's really hard" was seen as "lewd" or the writers having a "dirty mind". Now, it just makes the male characters seem creepy. My strong suspicion is that this some of this stuff was shoehorned in by the localisers who were struggling to replace Japanese specific puns and gags.

While this review contains more criticism than praise, that's only because everything else about 999 is EXCELLENT. The character artwork and animations are great. The music nails the atmosphere and tension. The 3D environments are high quality. The puzzles are rarely frustrating and often quite satisfying (I say this as someone who usually sucks at puzzles-- Professor Layton probably shortened my lifespan).

From what I've read about the remake, it seems like the DS version is superior. If you're on the fence about 999, I would definitely recommend you give it a shot. Try and avoid plot spoilers and just go in blind.

That being said, don't be afraid to use google to find all the endings. Or, if you're so inclined, use some "morphic resonance" and download the information directly into your brain.

Amazing, just mind blowing. play it now

The greatest visual novel of all time. Incredibly written with some of the best characters ever in a video game. The best of which being Snake in my opinion, for anyone whos played before. All of the common endings keep you wanting more, with each of the games special endings leaving me speechless, and making the three playthroughs I did all feel warranted. In addition to the story, the game has some of the best sprite work ever, and some very fun escape rooms which help break the story telling at the right times. It also has a fantastic soundtrack to boot, the best game ever released on the DS.

9/10 because 999.

Okay, but actually: how was this game so tightly written??

Got a bad ending where every one got killed with no explanation, there was an amnesia cop story, might still go back.

i played both the ds and pc version. it's not perfect but it's a great game!

game was too hard im too dumb for puzle

spike chunsoft you actually did something

For someone that doesn't like math or understand much of the nuances, I was able to enjoy this a lot! The music is great and (for the DS version) while having to replay through it is tedious, the story and ending is all worth it. Learn about magic square numbers and the basics of Sudoku before playing it though. Trust me.

AI: The Somnium Files is one of my top games of all times, so I was pretty excited to try out 999 knowing that the writing was going to be interesting and that there was a flowchart system similar to the one in AITSF. I think that while this game is objectively fun, it isn't super interesting to me and I was finding a lot more loopholes or poor writing choices, at least in my opinion, in this game than in AITSF.

The puzzles were fairly interesting, I liked the variety, though some of them were so frustrating and definitely made me want to pull my hair. For the most part though, I enjoyed the digital root thing and thought it was fun, though I was definitely sick of the base 10 system at the end of the game. I still don't get how 10 = 16 and how I'm supposed to remember that.

The voice acting in the game was really well done, I liked the art style considering it was an older game, and I felt like the controls were pretty easy to use though I had a hard time figuring out some of the buttons on the keyboard and mouse controls. The game still tells you that you have to play from beginning, but in the PC version, they have the ability to jump around in the flowchart which I am glad I discovered - albeit, maybe a little bit later than I would've liked.

Honestly, I probably would've enjoyed the game a thousand times more if Akane wasn't a part of the story, let alone a significant part of it, and by the end of it I was rooting for something, anything to happen to her in any of the timelines because I was so over her. I really enjoyed Lotus and Snake, but honestly ,the voice acting from all the characters(except you Akane) was great.

I definitely recommend purchasing this game on a sale as it is still really fun, but just be prepared that it is much different in quality and puzzle style than something like AITSF if you had played that first.

maybe one of the best visual novels ever???? it's really good as a standalone but if ur fucked in the head like me, the rest of the series is a must

I loved this game, such a great story and great plot twists that made this game so fun to play. I also loved the game's character desgin and art style.

Вторая зашла чуть больше чем первая, но как начало истории просто шикарно.

actually think danganronpa is a masterpiece compared to this
