I played this game because the concept reminded me to YTTD, and it's good for the time it was relased. The concept it's very original, I totally se this game being some of the DS hidden gems. The only thing I disliked it's that the ending you get it's completely random, and the probability of you choosing the good doors in order to get the good ending the first time are very low. I understand that games before needed to extend the lenght of the game by making you play more than one time but I wuld have liked to at least feel that I had more participation in the ending that I got rather than "I guess I'll go here because that characater that I like also goes there".

Look. There's some really genius stuff in here, and I love that. But there's also some really illogical (read: stoopid) stuff and I do not love that so much. It's such a shame, as many great ideas aren't capitalised upon, and I'm torn as how to rate this. I was particularly peeved that a lot of the gameplay was more "trial and error" than inductive reasoning. Honestly a good time, but also a frustrating one. (As frustrating as trying to move a [heavy object].)

extremely rough ballpark on the dates. this was a really fun game

Persona 5 was the game that had hooked me the most in my entire life, until today. The story of 999 is unparalleled. I had no sleep at all because of it. It's probably the best story I've ever had the pleasure of consuming in my life. Being relatively short is an advantage to it, as the way in which from start to finish it goes at top speed and makes it impossible to take your eyes off the game for a second wouldn't be possible if the story lasted tens of hours. That's a point I have to give to games like Persona 5 and Xenoblade 1. However, I can't help but say that despite being a shorter story, it's probably the most flawless and impressive story I've been able to experience so far, at least in terms of video games, no doubt.

This game should be illegal, I couldn't tear myself away from it until I got all the endings and finally cleared up all the mysteries of this story. It's so ridiculously amazing. The setting is perfect, the soundtrack is perfect, the characters are perfect, everything is perfect. Bro, an escape game on a giant sinking ship is such a catching idea. And the twists are so crazy I can't believe them. It's genius. The thriller of the game is unmatched as well. It's perfect.

I don't have much more to add, the story is the strong point of the game clearly, but the puzzles are also very good and fun, and having to replay several story chunks to get all the endings never felt boring or tedious, especially since there's the function to skip the dialogues you've already seen before. I also just loved everything so I didn't care that much about going through some parts again. The game is amazing, five stars without a doubt.

a game about systems and working within systems and the people in those systems and how they use those systems and how they can't escape the systems and how they were responsible all along for the systems. Seek A Way Out.

The story really hooked me, and the intricate sci-fi mystery thriller plot made the game engrossing enough to overlook some of the more frustrating gameplay mechanics.

The escape room gameplay is a great complement to the visual novel segments. Even though there's a huge amount of dialogue and narration in the game, it rarely feels like a slog to read through.

Where the game does become a slog is in finding all of its alternate endings. After obtaining one of the common "bad" endings, you are sent back to the beginning with painfully scant guidance as to how to proceed. While you might enjoy exploring new scenarios on your 2nd (or maybe 3rd) route, eventually you'll get tired of holding down the right D-pad for 2 hours only to be rewarded with the same unsatisfying non-sequitur endings. There's also no guidance on which of the many decisions available to you will impact the ending. Most of them don't.

Strangely, the game does include two handy "preview" videos that give clues on how to unlock the full story, but these videos only become available after they would have been most useful. The solution here, as many have pointed out, would have been a flowchart mechanic, which would allow you to skip between completed scenarios in order to find new paths (I see they implemented this feature in the remake).

While the localisation and writing was generally top-notch, there were a couple of things that bugged me.

The first was the characters' truly excessive swearing (I blame the localisers!). It is hilarious to see these characters swearing at each other CONSTANTLY, even when it doesn't fit the tone ("You Old Bitch! Fuck!!"). I laughed out loud when, during a dramatic, major story moment, our protagonist blurted out "What the shit!". Truly an iconic line that will be remembered for generations. While it's sometimes clunky, I do appreciate the writers trying to go for a more "adult" tone to match the subject matter. This game probably goes toe-to-toe with Chinatown Wars for edgiest game on Nintendo DS (Anyone wanna deal some heroin?).

Less endearing is the way the characters' sexist or objectifying harassment of women is played for laughs. Back in 2009, dialogue about looking up a female characters' skirt as she walks up the stairs, or asking female characters to repeatedly say "it's really hard" was seen as "lewd" or the writers having a "dirty mind". Now, it just makes the male characters seem creepy. My strong suspicion is that this some of this stuff was shoehorned in by the localisers who were struggling to replace Japanese specific puns and gags.

While this review contains more criticism than praise, that's only because everything else about 999 is EXCELLENT. The character artwork and animations are great. The music nails the atmosphere and tension. The 3D environments are high quality. The puzzles are rarely frustrating and often quite satisfying (I say this as someone who usually sucks at puzzles-- Professor Layton probably shortened my lifespan).

From what I've read about the remake, it seems like the DS version is superior. If you're on the fence about 999, I would definitely recommend you give it a shot. Try and avoid plot spoilers and just go in blind.

That being said, don't be afraid to use google to find all the endings. Or, if you're so inclined, use some "morphic resonance" and download the information directly into your brain.

Amazing, just mind blowing. play it now

The greatest visual novel of all time. Incredibly written with some of the best characters ever in a video game. The best of which being Snake in my opinion, for anyone whos played before. All of the common endings keep you wanting more, with each of the games special endings leaving me speechless, and making the three playthroughs I did all feel warranted. In addition to the story, the game has some of the best sprite work ever, and some very fun escape rooms which help break the story telling at the right times. It also has a fantastic soundtrack to boot, the best game ever released on the DS.

Im a big fan of novel games like these and this game was a pretty good one. The characters were all pretty good and there were some really good plot twists. Not much to say but a solid 7/10 game.

Reviewing every game i've fully completed #6

would've been cooler on the DS frfr

Do not play any version of this aside from the DS version w/ a text speed patch

This game has some genuinely good story moments and did a good job of making me curious. I was so fascinated to see what was actually going to happen I could look past a lot of my issues with the game.

And then it explains everything and it's just the most frustrating and inane shit I've ever seen. Retroactively ruined itself for me.

Also a 9/10.

They did so much with this concept, I could hardly believe it. It's bonkers, it knows it, and yet it's still fucking incredible.

i was talking about ace from one piece

This is the exact kind of shit that I love. I love insane anime adventure games with weird plot twists, puzzles, and characters who talk like living wikipedia articles. This game also uses the form factor of the Nintendo DS in a pretty creative way.

Having to replay rooms and some shitty puzzles make hunting down all the endings kind of a pain, but the short runtime and batshit true ending make it all worth it. Love a game that utilizes its hardware in a creative way

I wish there was a 20 point scale on this site. High 7, low 8. Great game.

Please don't play the remaster. The voice acting and flow chart aren't worth the downgrade in writing.

Out of the Uchikoshi games I've played, unfortunately by default my current least favourite just because I find the cast of the AI games super fun and I just vibed with them more. Though this game easily contains the best story out of the three I've played, hands down, with a pretty out of left field twist that works really well. Junpei is a really great protagonist too, he's funny, he's smart, and he's really socially awkward in a funny way. I do sorta wish I played this on DS like intended but I don't think I'd have it in me to play every single room multiple times

Good game, gripping story, wish it were slightly less annoying to get the true ending/map everything out.

9/10 because 999.

Okay, but actually: how was this game so tightly written??

Got a bad ending where every one got killed with no explanation, there was an amnesia cop story, might still go back.
