(Moving this review from the 1994 version since I logged it under the wrong one - written in June 2022)

It's great to finally be able to play these games as one big playthrough as intended. I do think the zones in this game vary wildly in quality, you can see my (very very) short comments on them here and here.

Luckily the bad stages don't seem quite as bad when they're no longer 1/6th of the entire game. And by adding them all together you may just get away with quantity over quality anyway.

What else is there to really say about this game that wasn't covered in either of the first 2 reviews? Well Hyper Sonic of course is a huge new addition. Essentially doing all 7 special zones in both 3 & Knuckles. It's a faster, higher jumping version of Super Sonic that glows multiple colours. It's pretty cool. But I haaaate that when you start collecting the Super Emeralds you can no longer use regular Super Sonic. Why punish players like that? Also Hyper Sonic can breath underwater while Super Sonic can't despite the fact I'm pretty sure there's zero sections in the game where you can get Hyper Sonic that also contain water.

Basically both games are very clearly 2 halves of another game, so this version is the only way to feel like you're getting the true experience.

My favorite classic Sonic game. I love almost everything about it, it is the best version of the classic gameplay in my opinion. Only nitpick is that Tails can be super helpful, or super annoying. It fun to use him to get to places Sonic shouldn't, but his AI will take air from you, and killed me twice during the final boss. I love this game tho. (Played on Sonic Origins, with modded music lol)

A few "what the hell do I do here" moments--usually the fault of being stuck somewhere where the only way out is a mechanic you haven't been taught but are expected to figure out on your own--and the removal of Ice Cap Zone's iconic soundtrack are the only things I can even imagine complaining about here. On the other hand, the Origins release of Sonic 3 & Knuckles fixes the glaring lives problem of the Genesis Sonic games on top of rebuilding the game engine to allow for proper widescreen gameplay. This all but eliminates any of the quibbles I had with platforming in classic Sonic. The balance in this release is tipped well in favor of fun over frustration.

While it's hard not to compare the shiny new Origins versions of these games with the near-flawless Sonic Mania, the coherent narrative and flow between levels help to make up the difference. A greater serving of personality is a fine tradeoff for Mania's meticulous polish. With the improvements Sonic Origins adds, it makes Sonic 3 & Knuckles a serious contender for the best Sonic game.

The blue spheres mini game is my fatal weakness. I must have found a couple dozen rings in my playthrough, but only ever got three Chaos Emeralds.

i don’t use the word peak lightly but,,, what can i say

Sonic 3 is incredible (even though it got understandably ratio'd by Mania), and Sonic and Knuckles is a big wet fart of a second half, but overall yeah it's good and stuff

haven't been on here in a while, played and beat a lot of games since my last review, and i'm excited to eventually get back to reviewing/rating everything on my profile as well as potentially revising existing ones. i think the main reason i haven't used this platform as much as i used to is because this thing doesn't have a mobile app. i'd go bonkers on here again if it did, and i think it would probably get more eyes on this platform than it currently has, which is like maybe seven. i know it's a small team over there but i really want to see this succeed! in the sea of quite a few "letterboxd but for Evil Gamers" websites this one stands above the rest as one that doesn't suck complete ass. i like having a platform where i'm able to succinctly talk about games while also goin crazy over them if need be. helps to sort my thoughts and appreciate what i'm reviewing more. i also like that people read and sometimes like them that's nice. oh yeah also this game is fucking awesome

I see why it's the best out of the four, lots of charming visuals and music, it has a ton more effort than the other ones and the in game cinematics are something this games needed a lot.

Except for that box in carnival zone, that one box lowers this game's core by 7

Redoing this one too because I didn't realize how much different this version of 3&K was compared to its original release or A.I.R. Not too big of a list of complaints for the game itself but the engine used in Origins clearly wasn't finished, which was explained by the devs by the time of the game's release. The momentum is just off in particular moments in Carnival Night and Ice Cap paired with the shit ton of collision issues that might actually be worse than its Genesis counterpart. The new compositions reek of Sega's inability to give developers comfortable working schedules (to the point they just didn't allow the original team to work on the game post launch), mainly because of how easily they could've upscaled the audio of the Prototype soundtracks, instead of just dumping them on entirely different hardware like idiots. But that aside this is still Sonic 3K at its core, and the level design is as rich as it is in every other version that exists. I should also mention that this project was a remake from the ground up, something I wasn't aware of during my initial playthrough, and it is very apparent from the tons of new sprites for Sonic and the animations for cutscenes to bridge the gaps the original couldn't, since Sega wasn't any better on their employees back then either :/. I'd definitely recommend AIR or even just the original release over this but for modern consoles it is competent, and unfortunately the ONLY official way to buy the game for modern hardware, as every other version was delisted when Origins came out, along with the other games in the collection having the same treatment. I hope Sega learns how much they'd gain by just giving their workers time to finish a product, because by all accounts, Sonic Origins as a collection is competent, and the amount of work put in to it is apparent, but it is far from the definitive product it could've been and showed signs of being throughout its runtime.

While not better than sonic 2 in my opinion, this is definitely a very fun game. The sliding mechanic is very annoying to me, however the other mechanics are fun and the music most of the time is pretty good.

A really good way to go out for the classic 2D Sonic games. Not a fan of Sonic's new sprite, but it is not that big of a deal.

So this is the Origins version, and the current build. It plays incredibly, but the replacement tracks are still just bad. I can stand them, but they still suck compared to their prototypes or just the original OST. But this port’s much better after all the updates. From a general standpoint? Perfectly fine way to experience 3&K for a casual fan. Not the best if the game owns a part of you like it does me. Bitch suck dick.

9.6/10
Really good game, I enjoyed blue spheres but I prefer half pipes more, the controls are good here, the ost is nice too, the sonic 3 half I enjoy a lot but the sonic and knuckles half here is fine. The level design in sonic 3 is pretty good, it's just fun from start to end, sonic and knuckles is fine, it really depends on my mood, sometimes I think it's good but other times I don't really like it.
Music for both is pretty cool too for both, ice cap and flying battery are my favorite zone tracks.
That's all I have to say for sonic 3&K, talking about the remaster, this is the only project in origins that the devs actually cared about what they're making. Since the others felt like really lazy ports of the mobile version but that's just me.
I still do keep my opinion that 3&K is a fantastic game from start to end.

Still the goat, happy it got a remaster. 2nd time I’ve beat this game this year.

It's the best 2D Sonic... Even with Origins' butchered music

I am not the biggest fan of the Genesis Sonic games and this entry did little to change my mind. I will admit there are some really cool segments in the game and I enjoyed the boss fights, but most of the time I found myself frustrated by poor platforming mechanics, hidden enemies or traps, underwater levels, etc.

despite its musical changes, it is still the best Sonic game ever made. i played through the whole thing as Amy this time around and its a blast. the widescreen and removal of lives almost make this the definitive way to play

Melhor Sonic dessa trilogia clássica.

The best of the original four games. While I don’t like some levels, like Sandopolis, the level designs are the most refined compared to the others. Likewise, the graphics are absolutely stunning and a quite noticeable improvement over 2. The elemental shields give Sonic his own unique abilities to compensate for the other characters expanded movesets.

Now onto Sonic fo… Oh no.

One of the best 2D platformers of all time!

This is like the game to ever. Its just pure joy every time I play. The is the best official to play it as well. even without the upgrades in origins, sonic 3 is a 5/5 game. And now its even better.

Best level design for classic sonic by far but some parts feel unfair and remind you that you are still playing a classic sonic game

Still the best classic Sonic game. It has issues, specifically the levels sometimes being too long for the timer, but it seems Sega made sure that these style of Sonic games went out on a high note until they eventually topped it with Sonic Mania. The replaced music in this version is a shame, but the new music isn't bad so I'm fine with it, and it's only an issue if you've played the original and are attached to those songs.

i think i have replayed this game more time than i have drnk water

Best one out of the classic 2D Sonic games

Neben Sonic CD glaub ich echt mein lieblings classic Sonic geworden
