This is definitely the best game in the series compared to the games that came before it. It has the most story (and a pretty good one too) and best general gameplay. The party changes throughout the game, which is cool. You can recruit monsters eventually, which helps pad out the lack of proper party members during some parts of the game, but it never feels overbearing or all that difficult to get decent Monsters to use. If you want specific ones it might take a while, but some of the best ones are very easy to get. This is the first in the series I played pretty much entirely without using a walkthrough, and it was nice being able to either know where to go or be able to figure it out reasonably quickly. The soundtrack was good, combat feels similar to DQ4, and the world is pretty fun to explore. Party chat was really cool in some spots. The story itself was surprisingly unique compared to most other rpgs I've played, which was nice to see. It was still somewhat simple in nature, but there are multiple memorable scenes that will stick with me for a while. Probably one of the least grind-heavy games I've played so far in the series. Sometimes the game could feel a bit too easy, but it was generally just an enjoyable experience throughout. I could easily recommend this to anyone who has yet to play it.

This was a DQ game that I never really had high hopes for, and I don't even know why I always felt that way about it. Looking back after beating this amazing game, I realized that prior to actually playing the game, I had no idea what the story was about. This is a story that spans over a decade as you follow Abel, son of Pankraz, who sets out to find the hero to avenge his father and find his mother. I feel like the party members in this game mean so much to me because they're family. The story means so much to me because it's about family. It makes it that much more impactful when things happen to your party members in the story because of who they are. What I really didn't expect from the story were all of the big twists across the multiple acts. It made for such an interesting story that I would gladly play again in the future. It was rather linear (despite the fact that it doesn't exactly hold your hand at times), but that means that it's lacking in fluff and unnecessary plotlines. I love the main cast and I think it's subversive story about having to find the hero instead of playing as him was a great change of pace. Ladja was an interesting enough villain, but I felt that he could've been a little bit more involved in the story at times. It's not the biggest deal to me, but he could've been a little more fleshed out at times. Overall this is a rather perfect RPG that I would highly recommend to any fans of DQ or RPGs in general.

Debora is the superior choice 😤 I said what I said.

My favorite DQ game by far. The story is such a dramatic roller-coaster and honestly what other DQ protag has suffered this much? Makes the absolute most of it's small cast and the Journey feels worth it every step of the way. There's a reason it the first DQ I ever managed to beat.

Pickup it up as a child.
Even all these years later it's one of the best rpgs I played.
